Converting a static choke shotgun barrel to screw-in
« on: November 03, 2004, 03:13:01 PM »
Is it possible to take a 28" static choke shotgun (20ga) barrel and convert it to a screw-in choke system?  If so what should this cost?

I'd like the barrel cut to 26" at the same time.

Most gunsmiths will do the job (for around $75-100 I think but am not 100% sure so I'd recommend checking around). Add 20 bucks per choke tube on top of this. I'd want a good smith for the job as if the threads are not cut square, you could possibly end up with a pattern that is off to one side. Cutting down the barrel would run extra, maybe $40-50. You are almost as far ahead to look at an aftermarket or replacement barrel, most of the new ones will already have the threads and would likely be cheaper in the long run.  For not all that much more, maybe 75-100 bucks, you could just get a new shotgun like an 870 Express and let's face it who could not use an extra piece in the cabinet?

Safe shooting.

Please note that some shotgun barrels are too thin for normal screw choke installation and some won't even work with the thinwall tubes that are available.  It is possible for a good smith to adjust the fixed choke to whatever (with in limits) choke you might like.  It's even possible(usually) to cut a choke into a shortened shotgun barrel.  Also in this area choke tube installation runs a bit more than $75-100, it's more like $125-175..  Some specialty tubes like the Brileys will be quite a bit more..

There is a smith in Glyndon Maryland that does this and is very good at it. I'm not too sure of the spelling but I think it's called Chaco Choke. He makes modifications for Turkey shoots and for a couple of bucks, a phone call will get you facts and not opinions. This number is about 10 years old and (410-526-5635) if it doesn't work, contact www.duffysoutdoors.com which is right in the neighborhood. They might have a current number if one's needed.

Just the same, thanks for all the opinions and info.
Flash, I'll look into it, thanks.  I was wondering if it would be worth the $$$$

I send all my customers choke work out to Michael Orlon in Mass.   He will set your shotgun up for the screw in chokes for around 65.00 and this includes one choke tube.    If you give me a call when I am in my shop I will give you his phone #.     You can contact me at 207-938-3595.    He is also very fast as in the barrel is on the way back to you in one or two days.

:D  Check out www.carlsonschokes.com   For $85.00 They will thread a barrel and supply three choke tubes. They have a good reputation.
