44-77 Sharps Loads
« on: November 28, 2004, 11:09:16 AM »
Do any of you bp cartridge guys have reliable data for loading 44-77 Sharps cartridges using pb?  I have acquired the dies, bullet mould, proper brass (it's an 1869 Sporter) and shell holder but am having difficulty finding bp reloading information.

Thanks!

I have never heard of  or seen a .44-77 Sharps.

Is it an original rifle?

But the .44-77 Remington was a very popular & kin to the .43 Spanish.

I just did a Google search for the “.44-77 Remington” & came up w/ approx 250 hits. There maybe some info there.

I’d log onto the Shiloh board & do a search of their archives. Seems to me that this cart. has been discussed there.

Did some additional research & Sharps did load a.44-2.25” BN.

According to Sellers, “the Sharps Rifle” (p 339), the round orig. was a Rem. Cartridge  & was 1st introduced in 4/1869 in the sporting rifle.

Standard Sharps loads were: .44-70-380 & .44-75-405. Rem loaded same cartridge w/ 77 grns.

Re-reading this hread it does appear that you have an original rifle.

If you haven't done so, slug the bore to determine its dia.

It is not unusual for the older bores to be 'over-sized' compared to  today's bore sizes....

Thanks, guys.  Yes, it's an original 1869 Sporter, so it takes the cases with the thicker rim.  It's in beautiful condition and I sure would lke to shoot it a few times just to see what it does.  I've picked up a few bits of information along the way that y'all have contributed greatly to.  Thanks!

That's Chambersburg, PA, about 25 mi. west of Gettysburg, and yes, I love the battlefield.

in shooting buffalo rifles Mr Venturino lists loads for the 44-77 and the 43 spanish  ... he used a 405 rnd nose sized .446  over 77 gns of any brand of powder  ,goex 2F swiss 1,1/2 elephant or wano  with a .30 wad  and fired with a Fed 215 primer  the other bullet was a RCBS #44-370 FN,same load.
he used the same basic case and run it through  the approiate die set.
If you dont have this book you should get a copy it is very good
