6.5 JDJ on the way
« on: November 05, 2004, 11:11:25 AM »
Well guys I just called SSK and ordered my 6.5 JDJ barrel.  This will make my third SSK barrel, the others being a 375 JDJ, and a 300 Whisper.  I've looked for a used 6.5 for quite a while, and I just plain got tired of waiting.
This will make barrel # 10 for the collection and I've only been shooting these things for about 2 1/2 years now.  When does the madness end?

It doesn't!!!   I started shooting Contenders in 1969, adding as needed or as could be afforded.   4 years ago had 20 "C" frames, 6 "E" frames and over 90 barrels - all the scopes, dies and brass to go with them.    So I decided to "cut back", and sold all the factory barrels, only keeping the custom wildcats, all the Enocore line completely and most of the scopes they were wearing.   Did it help?   Yeah, right!    Back up to 20 frames and over 40 custom barrels already, and still buying.   There is no hope for any of us.

You'll love that SSK 6.5 barrel... I sure love mine.

Well, the barrel arrived yesterday.  I put a leupold base and rings on it last night, and the scope should be here today.  I'll have to make time to work up some good loads for it, our deer season starts next Saturday, and I'll most likely spend any free daylight hours in the woods until the end of January.
Does anybody have any good loads for H322 or W748 w/ 120 gr bullets?
I've used these powders on my 223, 7-30 waters, and even my 375 JDJ.  There just not listed for the 6.5JDJ.
Thanks,
mkee

Proponents of other CUSTOM barrel makers please note that long delivery time from SSK. He ordered it on Nov. 5 and got it on Nov. 11. Let's see you do that with ANY other custom maker.

OK, I'll accept that challenge GB!

I called Fred at Bullberry in UT on a Tuesday about wanting a 12" stainless 221FB barrel about 2 years ago, and received it in Vegas on Friday - same week.

No, it wasn't already in stock at BBW like JD's "standard" proprietary barrels are at SSK, and yes I know I got extra service as an old friend of Fred - it took me by surprise when it showed so fast... I hadn't even asked what lead time was going to be.

But comparing small 3 or 4 man operations with SSK's operation is apples to oranges.

You all know I am a strong supporter of SSK, have taken that stand many times on this board.   And you also know that I have a bunch of JD's barrels and consider them one of the top choices.   But SSK is NOT the last word in custom TC barrels even if they are a board sponsor here GB.

Now you're the one comparing apples to oranges. You admitted you got SPECIAL treatment. Mkee didn't. He just got what everyone gets. And I didn't say they were the "the last word in custom TC barrels". What I said was from them you get prompt service and a quality product always. From the others unless you're a "special friend" you get a long wait.

Dunno what your problem is of late but don't bring it here.

Apples to oranges:   A small shop that can't inventory barrels - makes each one to order verses a larger shop that does inventory their own chamberings at least - and the 6.5JDJ is one of their own long standing chamberings.

Yes I did get special service from BBW even though it wasn't asked for.   But "normal" lead times of the small custom shops are still a product of the apples to orange thing.

No problems here GB.    I only answered your question with the same tone as it was written is all.
