15" 7-08

I was going to the range to check my zero with my Encore this weekend and just for the fun of it I loaded up some 120 sierras and 44gr of 4064, which is their hunting load. My first two with this load went about an inch and a half high at 125 yards. My second round widened the hole. My third went about a quarter inch over it. I have got to learn not to look at every shot till I have finished shooting my groups. Needless to say I think I have a new hunting load for my pistol. I was using the accuracy load of 36.3 gr of 4064 and the 130ssp. It is hitting an inch and a half high at 50. Any other good loads would be helpful

i shoot 41.5gr of H4895 with 120gr nosler bt's in my 15" 7-08. get 2800fps, and good accuracy. 42.0gr was recommended to me by "xphunter", but my barrel shoots 41.5gr better. only load i had to try. 8)

JC;

I have 2 7mm-08's in rifles and have found that IMR-4064 works best. Seems like this powder was made for the 7mm-08. I like the Sierra  120gr. Spitzer ahead of 44 gr. of 4064. Out of my Ruger Compact it will shoot 1 inch groups all day for five shots.
Sounds like you have a winner i that pistol.
Good Luck  :grin:

The 7-08 is hands down my favorite centerfire round in a speciality handgun, it's relatively mild on recoil, easy to load for and tack driving accuracy is common for the cartridge.

I've had or do have Xp-100's, a Savage Striker and four different Encore barrels in the chambering.......being a sucker for the round I just picked up yet another (slightly used) 15" TC factory barrel this past Sat. morning.

I'm also fond of Varget (almost identical to IMR 4064 in burn rate) and every 7-08 I've tried it in so far has liked between 40.0 and 41.5grs of Varget under a Sierra 130gr SSP and a CCI BR-2 primer.

The one 15" barrel I didn't try Varget in was my very first TC factory Encore barrel back in early '97' when the Encore was just starting to become available, it would print five round cloverleaf 100yd groups all day with a Sierra 130gr Sierra SSP over 38.5grs of BLC-2.

Ike, good to hear from you.  I didn't know you were such a 7mm-08 fan.  In recent years I have converted to a 260 fan with the 7-08 being a very close second.  In fact, I have three SP barrels that are .264 bore.  I was not aware of Varget when I had my 7-08.  I don't think it had been introduced when I had my 7-08 XP.  Varget is the powder I use for my 260 MOA Maximum with 120 NBT's.
