RP factory round didn't fire in .308 ultra ...
« on: November 09, 2004, 05:31:22 AM »
i tried it three times: primer indented properly, no bang. this was a 150-grain core-lokt hunting round. its brothers and sisters in its box went bang, as did rounds from another box of same type. this rifle has handled hornady 165-grain factory rounds as well as winchester factory rounds just perfectly.
i haven't taken apart the cartridge. nor have i measured the case with calipers against similar rounds.
theories? mis-sized case that slid a 1,000th or so too far into the chamber? bad primer? it has powder (or something) in the case; i can hear it move ever so slightly. i rolled the cartridge on a flat surface. it appeared to wobble just a bit. could just be bullet runout. could be misshapen case. my little caliper is a simple steel thing. i doubt it tells me much.
anybody else experienced such a thing with factory hunting ammo in any chambering?
i remain highly confident in this little rifle. it is consistently sub-1.5 inch at 100 yards with factory rounds.
many thanks.

It sounds like the primers were bad, as I have heard of this before with Remington green/yellow box.  Contact Remington, maybe they will replace with a full box or two for the trouble.

Yup, Remington primers are probably the culprit. It happened to me on a box I got 2 years ago from Bass Pro. .30-30 core-locks didn't fire. I'm reloading now and haven't had a problem. Those core locks were the most accurate factory loads I had tried in my NEF, but you have to be able to count on the "big bang" when you're hunting, or you're done!
Try the bullets that didn't fire again in a different rifle if available.

 Good luck!
no x now!
