Author Topic: Novice needing Help, Scope Choice (Read 728 times)

I have a family treasured winchester 30/30 side mount that had a scope mounted to it, I love the gun, but now need a scope due to the old one malfunctioning, I want a new scope, but I don't want to spend more than the gun as many have mentioned. (spend as much on optics as gun), It is great shooting gun but would like a scope with good quality, shooting is done in heavy northern Wis woods, not many shots over 100 yards, but like to keep gun sighted to that. I have looked at some bushnell sportsmans models, not real sure of which one to choose. Not sure of 3x9x40 compared top 1.5x4.5x32 dimensions.

Any help would be great.

The 1.5x4.5x32 is all the scope you really need. I have one mounted on my Marlin 336 in .35 Remington for just the kinda woods hunting you mention. My other Marlin 336 .35 Rem. wears a Williams peep and firesight front sight. It will do what you expect of it.

Good advice greybeard......but a bushnell sportsman?? I would go for that.....maybe a 4x Nikon Prostaff, or 2-7 Nikon Prostaff (parralex set a 75 yards tho

The scope on my Marlin is a Banner. Quite a good scope in the low price range it occupies. Heck a good scope period. He want's a low cost scope. I gave him a solid viable option. You on the other hand want him to spend far more money than he says he wants to spend.

I have 45 years of experience using scopes on rifles and handguns. In those years I've used, abused, cussed and discussed a lot of scopes. Hundreds of them in fact. I try to offer folks a viable option in the price range they ask about based on actual experience with said scopes. If I didn't think the scope I recommended was a good choice I'd darn sure not have it on my own personal rifle.

o sry, he said that HE had been looking into the Sportsman's models not you, sry about the misunderstanding.....I overlooked your suggestion about the Banner, would another low cost choice be a Swift Premier.....??

IDK if they make them in low powered models under 3-9, but alot of people have had success with them....what do you think GB?

goose - the guy obviously don't want to spend more than a hundred bucks on a scope and I doubt if he REALLY wants to spend that yet you keep suggesting scopes that are above that and up to $200. WHY?

drags - check out the Swift line in their "standard" offerings. You can find them at www.eabco.com The Banner is a good choice too. Heck look at the Simmons too.

Thanks for the info,
I took Greybeards advice, a 1.5.x4.5x32, after talking with two local gunshops and a gunsmith, all agreed that was a good scope for the hunting we do in Northern Wis., plus age of gun played into it. The new scope is far better than what was on it.

No actually what eabco supplies is the Premier line.....and they only cost about $5 bucks over his $100 mark.......so where did you get the idea that I said for him to look into a $200 scope?? Or are you just taking words out of my mouth??!!

he is looking for a HUNTING SCOPE not A TARGET OR LONGGGGGG RANGE VARMINT SCOPE....EVEN THE 8-31X50 MODEL IS OBLY $188, and thats the stupidest excuse for a deer scope ever.......the 4-12x40 AO Swift PREMIER is $105 at digitalphotoclub
and that scope is alot better than the standard line....sry but i know what the prices are, and ive heard the standard models are not good, so for $105 he can have a very good scope, with a good warranty, and very nice optics for $100......

Trust me, go with the premier.......thats the only thing I have ever heard about swifts, stay with the premier's or dont get a swift......

I really dont see where he mentions an exact price range either....just not mire than the gun....and he was looking at bushnell sportsman's so the price range must not be 2 high......but still, if you cant roll out $100, then get a decent pair of iron sights, and save for a better scope.....

I have zero experience with the Swift line of scopes therefore no informed opinion of them. You pretty much never see them around this area for whatever reason. Now my friend Barry up in PA has one on his Ruger #1 in .204 Ruger and he is quite happy with it. Which model it is or even what power range I'm not positive. But he is happy with it.

I have not owned all brands of scopes nor all models within the brands I have owned in some cases. But I have owned and used ALL model variations in the Bushnell line. I have tested the entire line of Bushnell brand scopes and do recommend each and every one of them as good buys within their price range. Yeah even the Sportsman line and yeah some of my rifles do wear Sportsmen line scopes. Just part of the ongoing review process of them.
