I traded a .44 mag Handi barrel for a .243 barrel off a Youth Handi, and it's loose. There's a small gap between the frame and the chamber, and I was wondering if there's anything I can do about it or am I gonna have to trade back?

You can measure the gap and then use shim stock in the hinge pin socket on the barrel to move the barrel back the correct amount. Probably need to use a glue of some sort to keep it in place, but remember you may have to change the shim stock if it is soft material like brass.

My thoughts on this are to have the hinge pin socket built up with welding, then machined to the proper size. More money but stronger, longer lasting and safer, in my mind.

maybe try a feeler gauge or something like that.if you have an old feeler gauge you can try the differant thickness gauges until it locks up good

I used steel shim stock from Brownells to tighten up an old double, works well. I rolled a strip of the shim cut pin width and long enough to completely encircle the pin around a pencil to form it then slipped it over the pin and lubed it with some grease. With the steel shim you don't have to worry about wear as much as with a softer materiel.

As Handi said, welding is an option. However, I don't know that I would want that much heat on the hinge pin, since it may have an effect on the tempering. It might also change the way another barrel will fit the receiver. The part that is changable needs the modification (i.e. barrel), not the permanent part (i.e. receiver).

When you wrap the shim stock around the hinge pin, the height may also be changed. If the socket has the shim stock put in the rear most position, it will only move the barrel back and not change anything else.

The welding would be done on the barrel lug to build up the mating surface so it could be ground to fit.

Shims are still the fastest, easiest and cheapest.

I agree, I have an old H&R shotgun that I shimmed 30 some years ago, it still works fine. I think if I were doing one now, I would use Brownells steel shim stock or a cheap sacrificial feeler gauge and some JB Weld for a more permanent solution than the aluminum drink can or brass.

OK, this is what I did, and it works fine. I figured out what thickness I needed and with a pair of needle nose pliers I took a feeler gauge and rolled it so it would wrap around the hinge pin. Then I wrapped it around the pin and mounted the barrel. It fits sweeeet! But now the forearm doesn't support the barrel like it should. Oh well. I does shoot though. I found out today up at the lake. :-D

Use papper or thin card . Like the cards we shoot in postal match.

Best shim that I have found for the forearm spacer is a milk jug. Never like the idea of paper or business card since they will eventually get wet. Clear plastic from the milk jug has worked the best for me. Also found a good space for the synthetic forearms, which I'll post later.
