223, Blue Dot and small game?
« on: November 06, 2004, 10:59:12 AM »
Wondering if anyone has tried a mild Blue Dot load, say around 4-5gr, on small game? Thinking of trying some 45gr Sierra Hornet bullets to see what happens. Just wondering if anyone has experience and willing to share some go/no go stories.

Also, I'm sure there's something out there, but would Unique be a better way to go?

I have used bluedot with 45gr speer bullet out of my Remington 600 mohawk in 222.  The lightest load that I would use with it was 5gr of bluedot for 1300fps.    For your 223 I would start out with 10gr and your 45gr bullet and work your way down until you found what you were looking for in terms of performance.  At some point you will find that the bullet will fail to leave the barrel so be very careful.

I've shot hundreds of such loads, mostly at gophers over the last couple years. I use 10 or 11 gr under just about any bullet from 35 to 60 grains and get 2500 + or - for any of them. Max is somewhere around 14 gr but above 11 grains it starts to get too loud for my purposes.

I usually use CCI small pistol mag primers since they work as well as the rifle primer in this use and I happen to have a bunch I'll never use otherwise.

It ought to work just fine for small game, depending of course on what you aim it at!

Cheers
