The nearest Cabela's is several hours from me, but there are 3 Gander stores here in the Houston area which I visit on a somewhat regular basis. The few times I've been in the Cabelas store, I have been disappointed on the prices of their used guns. As for Gander mtn, near the end of last deer season I was in a Gander store just to brouse. Noticed a large number of their new rifles were not priced and there was one of these I had an interest in. In checking with one of the Gander clerks, I was told they were in process of reducing their rifle prices and that he was just getting ready to put the new price tags on those with no prices. While waiting for the clerk to sort the price tags we struck up a nice conversation. He found the price tag for the rifle I was interested in and mentioned it had been reduced at least $40. I was familiar with the pricing on this particular rifle and commented, gee ya'll reduced the price to about the normal retail price. The clerk glanced around and quietly said, yes we had to raise prices a month or so before the beginning of deer season to take advantage of expected rifle sales, and management finally realized that was a mistake after rifle sales were so disappointing. However, I did buy a used Ruger M77 (with tang safety) in 270 cal with a Bushnell Banner variable scope from Gander a few months ago for $210. Metal and bore was great, scope was still good, just the stock needed a little loving care. After refinishing the stock, fellow shooters at rifle range I frequent were surprised I had paid only $210 (plus tax) for it.
