New 223 UPDATE
« on: November 04, 2004, 10:55:59 AM »
OK, I called my local sporting good store right down the road about 500 yards. She has several NEF Handi's in 308 Win. She said I could come down with my 223 stainless barrel and find a 308 handi that my barrel would lock up on. 225.00 is all I need to come up with. I think I can do that. So I will have the 308 Win and 223 Rem. with the AR15 style stock and forearm. At least I can do some cheap plinkin with both of them. The winchester white box is cheap and I'm pretty sure I can find some cheap ammo for the 308.

I never called H&R. I knew what they would say. Even though they did put 223 on the older recievers back in the early 80's. I need a 30 caliber that I can shoot cheap anyway. 308 should work just fine.

Check around midway, champion shooters, cheaper than dirt, sportsman guide for surplus mil spec 308,147 gr usually isn't too expensive. Your best accuracy may or may not come with this ammo, I think it's only loaded to 3MOA specs.

Well, change of plans. The 223 barrel I purchased off MarkA fits perfectly on my Ultra reciever that I had H&R install the stainless 243 Win. barrel. So, I plan on making this my Medium and long range varmint gun. I took the laminated stock and forearm off and put it back for my wifes new rifle. I plan on ordering her a new rifle and cutting down the laminated stock to fit her length of pull. I'm going to order her a 44 mag and put on the laminated stock and forearm and a nice 3-9x32 scope. This will be her early Christmas present. She really loves the Cin. laminated stocks, so I'm really excited about doing this little project for here. Hopefully she gets a whack at a nice deer this year.

Congrats, i hope it works.

Get a Collett neck sizer set for the .308 (and lots of brass fireformed in your .308 of course ;-) and start cranking out some cheap, but good quality, loads of your own!

I have a .308 in a Tikka.  Love the cartridge.

Borg1, my post gets confusing sometimes. I'm not getting the 308 handi know. Just a new 44 mag for my wife. The 223 and 243 fit the same Ultra reciever. I might send the Ultra reciever back in for a 308 next spring. Problem I have is I keep changing my mind. Thank God I married a great and understanding wife. She understands my sickness. :-D
