Muzzle Loading Shoot
« on: January 11, 2003, 03:27:16 PM »
:-) We had a great mxl shoot at the NORTH OTTAW GUN CLUB today.  Last night had heavy winds a a lotta show.  When everyone started to show up for the shoot, the wind had died and the snowflakes were really huge.  I think that we had about 75 or so people show up to play with thier smokepoles.  I was suprised about the number of flinters that were on the line, and I thought that I was going to be the only one shooting one(.32 Pedersoli).  By noon we had a great pot of chile steamingand a lot of good toys on the blanket fer the raffle type drawing.  In the shoots we have eight differant type of targets, and three shots are fired at each.,and I managed to shoot all eight targets  while only using 9 otta 1400 excuses that i generally have been known to come up with on occasion.  No guns failed due to the temp (15 degrees),which has been known to occure with some over greasing of some kinda important parts.  The only problem that I had with my flinter was in the third target, second shot.  Could not get any spark so had ta turn the flint around.  That worked so I could finish(73 rd otta a possible 75 or so),at least I did not finish dead last.  Had a couple..flash inna pan,but a cleared vent hole took care of that.  All in all a great time was had by all and a couple new people really got hooked on the old smoke poles.  Everything had to be shot with a RB,and black powder(or clone),and open iron sights.    The best I did was I finished 4th on the eighth target, and my partner finished second.  Im not gunna help him clear his nipple next time cause I figured that how he got second.  One of my friends just got a GPR this summer and had only shot it enough to get the sights in.  The kid never shot a rifle before and was just spanking the five of us that were shooting in our group.  That kid looked like he was standing 10 feet tall when he got done shooting.  It got kinda interesting cause as the shoot got into its second hour,a lot of clothing was comming off and guys were getting kinda red faced and sweating.  Some were even noticed to be chugging cokes and eating snow.  Rumor has it that it had something to do ith the chile that everyone was eating.  YUK...YUK.... :toast:      King....stay safe

Hello all!   :D

King,

Sounds like fun was had by all.   By the way, did you get the recipe for that chili?   With the price of heat this winter; sounds like it may be a cheaper way of keeping warm?

Man, King it sure do sound like fun, believe it or not I do miss the snow back there. If only my wife had a little bit more meat on her bones she wouldn't mind either. When we had our place up in the San Bernardino mtns, she'd just stay close to the fireplace in the winter. My favorite time of the year.

Where would I check for local shoots around here? My club, The Mohave Sportsman's club doesn't have anything like muzzle loading shoots. I know a few of the members might be interested. RR

:D  :D   Mat & RR.    Yup ,was lotsa fun.  Right now the wind is blowing about 35 mph and im on Lake Michigan.  Kinda chilly out at present.  Yup,real good chile.and i did get the rec.  RR.  I would check with the NMLRA.  They might be able to help ya for some instate shoots.  Or..You could put up yer own at your club.  Give the guys about 6 weeks notice and I would bet that you will get some to turn out.  Keep rules simple..rb only, iron sights.  Have a blanket drawing(guys that show up can put an item on the blanket, and ya sell tickets fer a drawing)  Lotsa ways you can work it.  I spent the day in the garage casting by bpcr bullets.  I went through 30 lbs,and have another 30 to go with the ww,and that should keep me in that for a while.  I then have to cast some pure lead, same weight of metal to cast up.  Should keep me busy pretty much the whole week.    Stay safe...King
