Unique and the 454 Casull
« on: November 02, 2004, 11:31:56 PM »
Today I found some ammo on my shelf for the 454 Casull that consisted of a 345 gr. cast bullet atop 15.0 grains of Unique.  I don't know where I got this load but when i went through my loading manuals the only load for a 345 gr. bullet in the 454 Casull was for 11.0 grains.  Does anybody here have any information about this combination?

I can't speak for the 454 but for years I've used 10.6 grains of Unique behind a 240 grain cast semi-wadcutter in my 6.5 inch S&W Model 29 for 1000 fps.  So 15 grains in the 454 doesn't sound impossible, but I'd tell you to get better information than I'm giving you before you forge ahead.  Unique is a relatively fast powder so there's not a huge difference between enough and too much.

Freedom Arms lists load data based on Unique for 454.  I hope this helps.

Fifteen grains just seemed too stout to me so i dismantled all those rounds.

Give yourself a pat on the back for being smart!  The Freedom Arms site lists 14 gr. of Unique as max for 300 gr. cast, and you know darn well that these are the strongest revolvers made for the .454.  I use some of their data for shooting through my .454 barrel on my Encore, it works well, and I've experimented cautiously with some heavier weight bullets.  Let me know if there's something you're interested, I've got some loads that shoot real nice out of my Encore.
