Parallax's is one of the places I frequent.  When I'm at work I can only access a few firearm/hunting related sites, most are filtered out by Websense    (I got to find a way to defeat that).  All site sites are different, but good in there own way.  Some sites have some folks that are pretty far out on the edge if you know what I mean.

There are some pretty easy ways to get around those firewalls,
But they require some "OUTLAW" software to be installed on your
computer. Getting out from behind a firewall is a lot easier than
getting through one from the outside.  You have to ask yourself
though "is what I want to see from my work computer worth
getting fired over?" Some of these infiltration programs are very
aggressive over a network and your IT department will most
likely get a very large frown on their face when they find one
in their network. In my job, I am in charge of security for
3 different computer networks of about 120 computers each.
I can assure you that it is a constant job keeping people where
they are supposed to be!  It is Quite fun though!

The firewall is on the main server so I'm not going to mess with any "outlaw" programs to try an defeat it.  Our company is fairly small with no dedicated IT department, in fact of the folks here I know the most about computers.  They outsource all computer related service calls.  They were amazed that I was able to search the network and point a particular computer to a particular printer.  The boss was happy because he didn't have to call the service company  :roll:   Most of the folks in my office are older and haven't "grown up" with computers like I have.  The slightest thing goes wrong and they throw a post-it note on the monitor stating "Don't use this computer it's broken"

I visit a lot of gun sites on the net and i have read some unbelievable scary stuff and some had pics too.  But there is one story that gets me that i just don't understand yet.  The guy actually fired 30-06 out of his 6,5 jap rifle and some did go before it backed up??  I bought an argentine short carbine rifle once that i was told it was a 7mm.  Of course i left my eye glasses home and i couldn't see squat.  When i got home I just looked  at the bore size and knew it wasn't 7mm.  Me not knowing crap about the caliber of argentine rifles at the time I found out right away its a 7.65mm bore.  Which is no biggie I would of bought it anyway since it is a neat looking carbine.  But as I researched more into it I found out I had a cut down 1891 argentine.  The swept back bolt is the key it had been altered.  A place called Ye Old Gun Shop in LA. did it back in the 50's or 60's when these long rifles were imported so they would sell.  My point is it pays to put a bullet in the end of the barrel to make sure its the right size before you fire it.  Its not a matter of testing a rifle to see how strong it is its a matter of being sure before something really bad happens.  On my death certificate its goiing to say i died from natural causes not because i died from doing something really dumb or stupid.  It pays to check to be sure and safe what caliber some of these old guns really are before send something down the pipe.  I use caution with all of the old mausers at first because someone just may have recalibered it we never know?  Check it twice to be sure so we can shoot and safely enjoy this fun sport.  You can also check to see how much the bore is worn by putting a bullet in the end of the barrel too by how much it goes in the bore too it will give us an idea how much rifling is left(diameter).

I have a number of Milsurps that are in pristine condition.  I dont advocate chopping up origional battle rifles butI have rescued a Remington M 91 and a K 31 that were sporterized back in the 50's and 60's.  Everyone waxes and wanes about the history of milsurps but these guns were modified back when they were a viable option for the poor man.  Some were done when craftsmanship was long and dollars were short.  They served there owners well when the price of a Winchester or a Remington was simply not afordable.  These gun's have a history too.  I feel there is a legitimate reason to discuss these weapons to heck of the elitists.  I'm going to shoot mine...........Essex County

Some of the posts might have been very old they came up on a search
I was doing. They might have been from an archive. Firing different calibers than the gun is chambered for, Don't use SUPER HIGH PRESSURE rounds such as the INDEP or HOTSHOT (What High Pressure?),
Something about the Swedish Mauser shouldn't be used with modern loads
due to weak receivers ? Things such as that. Folks just seem quite a bit
more knowledgeable here.

I just built three military surplus guns for hunting and shooting.  I have 6 finnish mosins 91/30's that were captured from the russians while 5 are in excellent condition i chose the very good condition one for putting a scope on to shoot.  My other two are a rescued german 98k with a shot out barrel that i rebarreled (8MM) and added a military 3 post scope to shoot, play with and hunt with too.  I cleaned up the orginal stock and tung oiled it. My last one is a chilean '93 barreled reciever that I picked up an orginal stock for and added a military 3 post scope to shoot, play with and hunt with too.  I have new modern guns also but i wanted to show off what these old military guns can do too.  I'm just starting on a Egyptian Hakim 8mm semi-auto rifle and it has a hand made oak thumbhole stock w/pistol grip.  I have a scopemount for it too.  The stock is a little over size for my hand but thats ok I can finish it to the size of my hand with finger grooves too.  This gun was a parts rifle and i found all the parts it was missing.  I have a few hakims but i wanted one for serious shooting.  This is one of my project rifles for this winter.  All three bolt action rifles cost me under $200 each.  I agree with you we can't find a better affordable hunting rifle than a surplus gun.  Heck if i knew these guns were this good I would of never bought my last remington back in '94.

I passed up a 303 britt that was sporterized years ago for $75 and it looked good too.  I never will pass up another cheap one again.
