Shockwave trajectory/ consistency questions
« on: November 09, 2004, 04:16:59 PM »
I'm shootin' 90 gr. T7 behind 250 gr. Shockwaves in a stainless Encore 209x50 ... great groups (about 1 1/2") at 100yds... I just have a couple of questions...

1) any idea what the drop would be at 200yds?

2) what's the best means of keeping shots consistent?

I have been cleaning between shots and running dry patches, but then thought maybe I should be snapping caps after cleaning to remove any moisture left over in the breech plug from the range cleaning.

Any info. would be appreciated

I here some guy say to seat the sabot the same way each time you load,,example the petals to align let say with the front sight as a reference point ,apply the same pressure when seating the bullet and last is not to use solvent in cleaning in=between shot spit patch or (I use a little water from a spray bottle)followed by a dry patch.
I would think as far as the bullet drop of the top of my head ,would say 8 inches ,but the best idea is to shoot that distance. :D  :D

Without a ballistic calculator, I would say you're going to have around 10 inches of drop.
As for consistency, if loose powder make sure you measure the same every time (ie tapping the measure, etc).  Aligning the petals might be useful, I've never done a test though.  Don't worry about snapping caps, a semi-moist spit patch will not leave much residue since you flip it over and run the dry side before loading.

That load hits 1850 fps out of my Encores, with a 100 zero you drop over 12 1/2" at 200 and double that at 250.

thanks for the input... I appreciate it.  I will try the spit patch routine... so far I have been using the solvent method.  do you think it will affect groups much?

I will definitely shoot at 200yds before taking a shot at a critter.  Having a place to start helps w/ marking hits from that distance on the range.

thanks again...

The best way to shoot consistent is to be consistent. What I mean is to do everything the same way everytime.

I do not shoot sabots but I understand they need more cleaning between shots. I shoot patched round balls or lubed lead bullets. After every shot I wet a patch with saliva and run it down the barrel and back out. Turn it over and run it down and up again. Load and shoot.

You may have to use a little solvent between shots but I would not get too carried away. Just a quick wipe with a damp patch and a dry one would be plenty. I would not pop a cap unless you started having misfires.

Good Luck!
