Question! single six, buck mark, markII?
« on: November 01, 2004, 02:10:13 PM »
I have a couple questions!!!!

1) I am thinking about getting the 22 single six with ( I think 9" barrel). Good or bad? Is the longer barrel better?

2) I am also interested in getting an auto but can't decide betwn the buck mark or the mark 2.  I read alot of post and realize it's a personal matter but would like to hear from someone that has or has shot both! What's your review?

3) Last, does anyone make a 22 mag auto pistol? I want a hand gun for plinking and hunting! Thanks!!!!

As far as the Buckmark vrs the MK2 I would go with the Ruger. More after market stuff available for it. I have both and both are excellent guns but the ruger is the winner in my book. You may want to consider the new MK3. Basically the same as the MK2 but  the mag release has been moved to the conventional place behind the trigger guard and it has a loaded chamber indicator.  KN

I have one in 9.5" and 6.5".  They both are very accurate.  I always end up taking the 6.5 incher when I need a 22 pistol.  I have put a Super Blackhawk gripframe on both of them.  It balances out the longer barrels quite well.

I went with a mkii because ruger has a lifetime warrenty, browning does not. Even if a smith tampers with it, ruger will still fix it. You don't find that too often.  also, the mkii just felt more durable, maybe its just me, but I thought the buck mark felt kinda fragile. Just my $.02!

I used to have a Ruger MK2, very good pistol. Something about it didn't fit me & I couldn't hit squat with it. :(  I now have 2 Buckmarks. A Varmint  model 10" barrel (no longer made) that has a 2x Leupold on it & a micro model with the 4" barrel. No problems with either, both very good pistols. The Varmint is so accurate it isn't even funny, even with cheap loads the hole in the target at 25 yards will grow to the size of a nickel & just stay that size round after round. :)
I also have the stainless single six (6"), fun to shoot (slow reloading) & accurate. It's also nice to have the 22mag cylinder if you want it.
IMHO the autos are a toss up, what ever fits you best. If I were to buy a new single six it would be the "Hunter" model with a 7 1/2 bbl & Ruger's integeral scope mounts.

I have owned all three and the only one that sits in my gun cabinet now is the Buckmark Camper. I don't like the looks of the Ruger Mk2 at all. The Buckmark has much better lines and resembles a handgun, not a piece of pipe with sights stuck on top. My only choice over the Buckmark would be a  Challenger or Colt Woodsman.

Teh longer barrel will give you more velocity  which translates to more power and less trajectory variation. It will also give you alonger/better sighting plane. The drawback is weight, ballance and ease of carry.

"Teh longer barrel will give you more velocity which translates to more power and less trajectory variation. "

In a revolver that may not be true.  The gap between the barrel and cyl. may release enough gas to make a longer barrel less efficient.  Friction may slow down bullets in a longer barrel.  In an automatic  or a single shot this is certainly the case.

1) I think the 9" single six will be a bit unwieldy. I had one in 6" and I think that was an excellent, well balanced barrel length for that gun. I sold the gun because my hands are bigger than the gun was designed for and I could never master it in field positions because of the awkwardness of the grip.

2) I've shot both the Ruger and the Buckmark, and have seen both perform in bullseye competition. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would buy and keep the Ruger. It really is dramatically inferior to the Buckmark.  I attribute the continued good sales of the Ruger purely to advertising and to the satisfaction of low expectations among their customers. I've seen people get rid of their Smith and Wesson 41 target pistols and switch to Buckmarks and call them superior to the 41.  I've seen too many of the Rugers literally fall apart on the shooting line-- and what triggers! They're terrible, and a trigger job doesn't seem to help much unless you go with something like the Volquartsen treatment, after which you have an awfully expensive Ruger that's difficult to sell, costs as much as a high-end target pistol, but isn't as good.

:cb2: I have the .22 Bisley which is a Single Six with a better grip. Love it. Accurate and, being a revolver, will shoot anything.

I had a Mark II and it would jam with anything. Got so frustrated with it, I traded it for a SP101 in .22.

If I were going to get another .22 authomatic it would be either the Buckmark or the Smith & Wesson. Have an old S&W 2206, and it's terrific. Wish they still made them.
