Winchester 94AE Bigbore 356
« on: December 14, 2004, 02:48:50 PM »
Anyone using a 356 winchester, I purchased mine about 15yrs ago,no cross bolt safety, the rifle has some gorgous wood with excellent grain, the bluing is deep and rich and the metal is polished to perfection. Mine is an AE but is also D&T for a williams receiver sight. I put it up with the box an never hunted with it or shot it. This is the only rifle I have ever done this with. I've been getting the itch to shoot it here lately though, just wondered if anyone was using the round for big game.

I know a young woman who whacked a bison with one - one shot right through the ear tag at 70 yds.

I'd sure be tempted to grab one if I ever found one.

I love mine i wish it didnt have the safety but does. Mcgowen whacked the barrel to 16 !/2 makes a nice short woods gun with a williams peep. SHot an 8 pointer with it this year on the run and the deer died instantly burrying its head in the dirt. I think ill have my girlfreind shoot a buffalo with it next year. Its become my favorite lever gun hits hard and not much recoil

Howdy Hey
Im fresh meat around here.. my first post in fact :D

My "pet" is 356 AE, and I am in love.. its an exceptional rifle for big game, joe527, as long as you know its limitations and your own.

Alot of people hear Win94 and go straight to thoughts of the 35Rem and thick eastern woods.. but a 356 in the hands of those in the "know",  it is as much rifle as most of us will ever need (NEED, not want.. god help us if we ever have to have just the guns we NEED).

If you hand load, and are cautious, the round will reach 300yrds with enough energy to drop deer, antelope sized game, with -10-12" drop (spitzer type bullets, one in the chamber one in the mag/+2-3"@100yds).

You can plug game animals with some serious lead in the 200+ range of cast bullets or pop off light hand gun rounds at rabbits or empty soda cans. Hand loading is where the 356 really starts to shine.

If your using the lonly Winchester factory round, your better served to keep shots on down to 200yds 250max..

Traditionalists Love the Williams Foolproof rear with a sourdough front sight. Bear hunters love the low power straight tube scopes. I bought my rifle with full intention to hunt Deer and Elk and everything in between that I could get a tag for in Utah.. so a weaver K6 sits atop my rifle.

If you havent shot a 356 your missing out on a real treat.. the are stiff if not beligerant. But not overly abusive. I would compair it to the likes of a hot 30-06 in a standard weight bolt gun. If you can handle the '06 you can handle 356. But be warned, the compact package of the 94 makes you forget the power you hold in your hands and one lapse of memory and it will cross your eyes real quick.Haha

So take her out and punch some holes in papper and I bet you'll want to get her after some game. Appearently those of us who know what this cartridge is capable of are few in the eyes of the manuf. and out spoken authors of the mags' we read.. but you wont find a more loyal almost fanatical group of hunters.. yes hunters.. this is a hunting round, in a hunting rifle...If your looking for rounds that must go three times the speed of sound, or super high tech ballistic wonder bullets, long range shots that would make a military sniper think twice, scopes that you can see dirt on the moon with or if your a fan of fancy, catchy names like "magnum" "nitro" "lazeroni" your going to be disappointed in the big bore 94's
But if your a simple person that still believes hunting requiors some skill in the woods (thats why it called "hunting" not "killing") and you dont mind pasing on a shot because, well in reality you probably shouldnt have take the shot anyway...welcome to the 356 club you'll find great satisfaction here.

Conrad-

Welcome to Graybeard, and thanks for picking Lever Actions for your first post.

I like most of the 35 calibers myself, and I'm just waiting for the rest of America to realize that a .358", 230 to 250 grain bullet going anything over 2100 fps is the perfect size for an all-around American game cartridge.  That way, my dream guns will become factory standard! :)   Don't worry about me, I know better than to hold my breath until that happens.

I bought a Winchester model 94 Big Bore in 356 Win. from a guy I work with. I'm not a Winchester fan (I've had major trouble with three of them :( ), except for my pre '64 Winchester model 88 in 308 Win., but for $200......what the heck! I use my Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. instead when I want to use a brush gun. I wish Marlin would start to make a 336 in 356 Win again! Or maybe I can find a used one.

Thank guys  :D
Im glad to have found another lever-forum...

leverfan, I couldnt agree more... the 35 Rem., 356 Win, 350 Rem Mag, 358Win and 35 Whelen will kill anything that walks in the hands of a skilled shot. And you can have a two gun battery that will hunt east, west, north and even south although I have to admit the 35's are a little much for the desert deer. They will work with loving grace on the javela in the south deserts however.

What cartridges are wishing back in production? I would really like to see Marlin bring back the 356 (although it would p*ss off alot of collectors) and I think a short action Ruger Express rifle in 358 would be a dream come true.
Other than old reliable rounds... I am actually wishing, dreaming and hopping that Winchester will offer a 338 or 358 cal short mag.. not that I like the "short mag" mentality ... but I think it is high time that some one gave the 350 Rem Mag some competition and I think the slightly longer, beltless case of the Win Short Mags would be ideal.
A cartridge I have loved since the day it was introduced is the 376 Steyr, I however dont own a rifle for that round because the rifles it's offered in are ummm....ugly? too D*mn light? Plastic (Im a wood man for the most part)...so that Ruger Express in the 376 would be my elk, moose, bear rifle in a heart beat.. well.. maybe Id have to save the pennys a little for the express.. but Id get my self one for sure.

Thanks for the welcome and kind words Bigjake. I try to put a little of my own feelings into my advice and expierences when I see some one with an interest in rifles and cartridges that go back to when people actually "hunted"... I have taken many an animal out to and beyond the 300yard mark.. but I have never done so out of necessity. I dont understand how for hundreds of years people fed their familys with black powder cartridges and today we hunt primarly for luxorie and we still seem to "need" to be over priced, over powerd and over gunned.
Elk season allways strikes my funny-bone.. people show up to camp with the likes of 300 or 338 "ultra mags", 340 weatherby, even seen a few 375 H&H at elk camps over the years.. and inevitably its the "kid" who on his first hunt, brought along the trusty 06 that he can handle well and shoot well that comes home with the meat...  usually with a single shot.

Thanks agian guys.. I look forward to chewing the fat here and making some new friends...

Conrad, Welcome!

Leverfan, does a 375 Win 94BB pushing 250gr at 2200fps count?  I'm over 2100 and still climbing so far.

What about a 444 Marlin (.429) pushing a 240 gr. at 2350 fps or a 265 gr. at 2325 fps?

All the load data I see shows a 265gr at just under 2100fps from the 444.

You're getting 2325?

handirifle - my load data for the 444 Marlinwith the 265 gn bullet shows anywhere from 2200'/sec to just over 2300'/sec.  This is from Vihta Vuori, Speer and Hornaday.  Also, from Beartooth Bullets, their cast gas-checked loads are just as good if not better for even heavier bullets.  HTH.  Mikey.

I think it has a 1:20" right hand twist. I bought the rifle brand new two years ago. It has a 22" barrel with Ballard-Type rifling.
