Hello And Wally World Problems
« on: November 09, 2004, 01:13:50 PM »
I'm saying hello, this is my first post, I hope to spend some time here in the future. I have been lurking for several months. I appreciate all the info that I have read here in the past. I believe this is the best gun forum on the net.
I went to Wally World yesterday and tried to buy an NEF rifle and the lady at the counter was very quick to say " If it ain't in my book I can't order it ". Needless to say I didn't get to order it. Has anyone else ran into this problem?
I had a printed out sheet of what I wanted to order following the instructions on their website. The store manager didn't know what was is on their website.

Welcome to GBO! :D  I've read that same story here before, but don't recall the exact steps to get the order processed. IIRC, you just need the sku# and it needs to be in the Sports South inventory, or you won't get it, even if they try.  Good luck..

River, the simple approach is to go to the guy down the street and pay $20 to avoid the hassle. If you are both cheap and ornery as I am at times, you just keep standing at the counter and demanding to see the next person up the food chain until you get to one with sense. This sometimes takes a while.

Don't even bother unless you have checked Sports South to see that what you want is in stock.

Who is Sports South, and what do they have to do with Wal-Mart?  Those prices listed are different than the walmart website.

Sports South is the supplier for Walmart firearms, their warehouse, so to speak.

Every time you do a search on Sports South they only show one or two rifles from H&R. If that is all they stock for all the Wal-Marts in the US no wounder you can never get one ordered.

When you do the search just use H&R and Long guns, you'll get 3 pages of inventory display with about half of the items in stock. Almost all the Ultra Rifles are in stock as well as a bunch of shotguns and Handi-rifles.

Thanks quickdtoo  Doing the search that way does return more H&R guns.  I thought something might be wroung because they would have to supply a lot of dealers around. Just looked and the 30-30 is out of stock maybe need to go with a 45-70.

Well, that was the trigger I was waiting on.  :toast:  I have the 30-30 , but it is the win. 94 AE. Now when you mentioned the 45-70, that is my sweet spot. A lot of guys here will tell you that you will need to get a 45-70. And so will I.  :)  I've  never had so much fun with a big bore rifle. Believe it or not, the recoil is less than the tracker II 12 ga. ( slug barrel). welcome aboard!

Big mistake, there Rj'......

The wrong help at Wal Mart is a problem....but they do sell some excellent shooters at some very reasonable prices.

Take a look at the guys that have bought some Weatherby Vanguards for only $250 -- and ask them if it was worth some of the hassle.     One of the guys at the State range recently bought a Win' Model 70 in 7 mm Rem' Mag' for $175.     When they're trying to give 'em away you just have to be patient!     :P      I've seen Handi's shoot so well that I'd push to get one from a Wal Mart -- if they're the only game in town.....like some of the guys probably live with.    Not everyone has a gun shop within 25 minutes drive time.

Take care.

I have to agree with SS, expecting first class service from employees at Walmart may be a bit of a stretch considering they probably aren't the highest paid clerks around, that and the turnover probably is quick enough that no one is there too long and they don't get profficient in the sales procedure for firearms, which in itself is somewhat of a hassle for anyone in the business. The .204 Ruger Handi that I just bought at BiMart was a good example, the clerk hadn't done many firearms and I had bought a couple there already so I actually knew more than he did and helped him find the correct form for FFL sales. He then called a manager to help with some store related inventory forms he had to complete. It took the better part of an hour, but I was happy to walk out with the first and only .204 Ruger they had received!

An Aside
« Reply #13 on: November 10, 2004, 01:20:04 PM »
I happen to have one of the Wal-Mart Weatherby Vanguards in .30-'06 on hold (at least it was last week) at Wal-Mart. Now that I am turning into a Handi Rifle fan, does anyone have an idea as what I might be able to get for the Weatherby if I choose to sell it? (of course it would not have been fired)

Profits would add to my pool of funds for a new stock and barrels for my Superlight.

Last year, the WalMart here would also only order by their outdated book and not by the Sportssouth site, so that didn't help me.  Now WalMart has their own gun catalog on line and you can see what they will order as well as get a Wal-Mart Item number to order it by (of course, you still need to check out Sportssouth for the inventory status to save you a delay there).

Here is their H&R Page.

PS:  Oops, forgot to mention they have NEF page too.

My freind went to Wally World and ordered a Handi . They would not let him pay the full amount in advance so him being the Kind Genlte soul he is paid all but one cent on the Gun . Then a few days later they called said they cant get the gun . He went back and got his money back .
As for the weatherbys at wal marts , the Vangaurd is the same gun as the Howa actions . They are made in Japan . They are still good guns but they are only re labled Howa guns which are in the sub 300 gun range . Howa  used to make the Smith and wesson 1500 series guns .
Dont get me wrong and start a flame on my butt , I like the Howa , Smith , Weatherby etc but they are not the Weatherby action . My uncle has 3 Original Weatherbys that Roy himself built on Mauser actions . He has been offered a princely sum for these guns .
My Freinds say that I am to indecisive , but i'm not so sure about that .
So. Central Mo. Hunter .  30-06 remington 740 carbine , 243 youth handi , the kids . Soon to come more Handis .

Mo........
I got one of the Weatherby Vanguards in 270 Win. for the $250 price.  I have not shot it yet but it came with a test target.  Three shots in less than 1" at 100 yards with factory ammo.  I think most everyone here knows that the WV is by Howa and is not the Mark V Weatherby.  If you do a search you will find a lot of talk recently about these Wallyworld deals, especially the WV's and the Savage.

Donaldo , I wasnt saying the Vangaurds were not good guns or anything like that . another uncle used to have a smith and wesson 1500 in 270 , that thing shot great . i just think that some people especially some folks around here call me up and brag about their weatherby rifle thinking its a honest to god weatherby . the same thing happened years ago with miroku of japan building browning over / unders . good guns by golly but fact is most guns are built by someone other than the marked name on the action . there is nothing wrong with that but i used to have guys come in the gunshop and ask me to buy their weatherby for 500 -700 when i knew it came from wally word for usualy under 400.00 .
one great argument i had was with a guy who brought in a mid 80s savage 99 in 308 winchester declaring it to be pre world war 2 vintage , only thing wrong with that was the 308 or 7.62x51 nato began around 1952 making his pre war world 2 claim invalid . i love researching guns and their history almost as much as shooting them. i to will have a wally worls weatherby some time in the future and i to will enjoy the prestige of owning a weatherby . the only thing i see them in here is 300 weatherby mag , i would like a 243 or 30-06 myself do they make them ???? . i saw a neat little gun there last night a laminated stocked short action remington reminded one of the 660 series . it was about a 20 barrel with what looked like a partial rib . i had a 308 in the 660 and regretted letting it go but it had a pit in the chamber , still short 3/4- 1 inch  groups but it bothered me .
My Freinds say that I am to indecisive , but i'm not so sure about that .
