Yotes with 22mag
« on: October 07, 2004, 09:37:22 AM »
Looks like I'm adding a 22mag Sportster to the collection.

I currently have a 22lr and 17hm2. The 22lr is my garage gun and the 17hm2 is going to be my long range squirrel killer.

I'm thinking of setting up the 22 mag for coyotes at night, maybe with night vision scope. We can hunt them at night with night vision during the night season, but only with rimfire or shotgun (no slugs or buckshot though). I'm wondering how the 22 mag would do on coyotes. Does it have enough knock down power, and about what max range to expect to have enough power for a good kill?

I have had good luck on coyotes with a .22 Mag out to 100 yards with proper shot placement, as all shots should be. I feel 125 yards is the stretched maximum dustance for a .22 Mag on coyotes . As long as you have no brush between you and the target, the shot placement is good, and the range is reasonable, it works well....<><....

I'm thinking that would be stretching it for night time hunting, which may be 50-75yds while using a call. I've never used night vision scope, so I don't know how effective they'd be, or better to use a red scope spotlight which is also legal here. I have a night vision monocular that you can barely see maybe 25yds and is very hard to make stuff out. Its one of the cheap Russian deals.

I wasn't sure about the power as we have them up to 40-50lbs around here, and most guys are using 243's during the day. I think some use them at night too, but that is illegal.

At the 50-75 yard range the .22 Mag with proper bullet placement will be a winner....<><....

Shot placement is everything. find the most accurate .22mag cartridge out of your rifle.

My experience is that anything CCI makes does well. The Rem. Premier is expensive but very accurate. Win. Dynapoint's suck. (although the .22lr dynapoint is great. in most of my rifles).

Your sporter's mileage WILL vary.

Some yeas ago with the Single six in 22 mag I fired six and three got the chest and he stumbled down about 15 yds away.

Ok, let's throw this into the mix. My Savage 93f really likes Fed 50 Gr jhp. Would these be a good option? I guess I'm asking if you want more penetration or expansion? These are particularly accurate in my gun, a good thing. But is this bullet choice a good one for coyotes?

PS. No 22mag barrel for my Sporty yet.

Nixter, I tried the 50's in my .22 Mag and had great hope for them as a coyote round but could not get then to shoot. Winchester black box or silver box will shoot about 1/2 - 3/4 " at 100, always within 1 - 1 1/4" at 100 so they are my coyote round. If your gun shoots the 50's go for it. I am going to continue to try to get my .22 Mag H&R to shoot them since I think they would be the best .22 Mag coyote round around....<><....
