Has anybody made a 6.5x55 necked down to 6mm? I'm thinking it would be great in old m96's and such. Somedody has to have done it before, but I've never seen one. Or would that just be a lower pressure .244...

Think 6mm Remington which is a 6x57 rather than a 6x55 that you describe. Performance would be virtually identical.

Would reflect only a modest and, more importantly, unnecessary and impractical gain over the aforementioned 6mm cartridge. With the pressure issues of the older mauser rifles, it certainly would be hard pressed to outperform the 6mm or the 243 anyway. Going .257 would almost exactly mimic the .257 Roberts, up to .277 or 7mm would produce the ballistic twin of the 7x57, and on up to .308 would put it between the .308 and .30-06 in performance (a totally pointless splitting of hairs). Nope, when you really look at it, the old Swede had best stay put. It's might fine where it is.
