possible to convert 450 Marlin to 458 WM or 458 Lott ?
« on: November 15, 2004, 07:17:52 AM »
Is it possible to have a 450 Marlin NEF/H&R barrel rechambered to 458 Win Mag or 458 Lott ?
I currently have a 45/70 that handles 52,000 psi Loads with no problem, so pressure should not be an issue.
Is the belt on the 450 Marlin cartridge 'taller' than the 458's belt ?
Seems that I read that the 450 Marlin is not just the 458 Win mag shortened a bit & it had something to do with the belt.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.

glock29.

Don't even think about it, unless you were to load it the same as the 450 Marlin. The H&R action is not designed for a magnum, that is not to say it can't be done.

Get a Ruger #1 if you want a big caliber SS magnum rifle, they can take it.

I noticed that you didn't state this was in Handi rifle ...and I really hope it isn't....but ...the bigger question is how did you come up with the 52,000 psi for your Load, since this is 2,000 cup above what even Hogdons publishes for the Rugers and Brownings in 45-70???????

Glock
Head these words of wisdom above.
First off the belt was designed thicker on the 450 Marlin for safety sake.

Second, Mac is right about the pressure.  If you want to make another chambering in the same pressure category, ie. using same case larger caliber type thing then go for it, but you'll find yourself either sadly disappointed or in the hospital loading these things to 458 levels, of either model.

If you re-cahambered and loaded to 450 Marlin levels, then what's the point?  Plus you run the risk of someone accidently loading a factory round in it.

DON'T DO IT.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

I advise heavily against it but it could be done, but you would have to have a reamer made that would allow the longer case to headspace on the case mouth like a 45 ACP and let the belt float. So long as you didn't want to wreck the gun, you could load it just fine at pressure levels of the 450 Marlin. This might gain you a 150 maybe even 200 feet per second over the 45-70, so I see little point in it.

To get an idea of what is really being talked about, it takes 45 grains of IMR 3031 to drive a 320 grain bullet at nearly 1400 fps from my 45-70, the load generates something on the order of 14,000psi. My 44 Magnum drives a 300 grain bullet at 1550 fps with 22.5 grains of H110 but requires a pressure around 40,000 psi to do it.

Conversely, a 45-70 will drive 400 grain bullets at 2000 fps at pressures of 36,000 psi, the 458 drives the same bullet at 2400 fps but takes in the neighborhood of 52,000 psi to do it. The 416 Rigby drives a 400 grainer at 2400 fps with only 42,000 psi. The Rigby also has a mystique and reputation the Magnum Winchester or the Lott do not have. I would set my sights on a Rigby, but it can't be done in a Handi.
