Making Chunk Bait
« on: November 18, 2004, 12:16:25 PM »
Right now I am hacking up the beavers I'm catching for some late season cat sets and weasel box bait.
After I get enough for this, I would like too put some in the freezer for making canine chunk bait next spring, using either one of the bait solutions or Sodium Benzoate.
My question is; should I trim all the fat off the meat I plan to use, and just use the lean meat, OR ???

Are you kidding?   Don't chop off the fat!  Sounds like something my sister would do!  A Beaver is the best chunk meat bait period, just chop it up hair and all, in small egg size 'chunks' fine grind the castor oil ect,
and mix it in too.  Let it sit, a day or two, toss it a few times,  and freeze it!

Knife;Thanks for the reply.
I should of mentioned I'm just using the carasses. The fur is on the boards. LOL. I just wasn't sure how the fat and stuff would work in a bait solution or sodium what ever it's called.  :D

If you save the oil sacs and castors seperate, you will have some fine lure ingredients that can be used straight or tinctured.  The oil makes a good rub set lure alone.

Some other things you can mix with chunk bait as experiments  are fish or  fish oil but only a little same with gland lure of animal you  are trapping BUT  i said a little .  You may not be able to discern it but the animal will.  Lenons' lures are made up of multiple things which is why they are one of the leading lures  today.  You can put your nose to bottle but you cant  pick out all the ingrediants but the animal can.  Go slow with your  recipes and write things down so if it turns out you can duplicate it again... Good Luck
