2 birds/1 stone(opening morning)
« on: November 20, 2004, 05:34:40 PM »
well this morning i got my 1st deer w/my SBH.....well make that 2. it was really foggy and i so a doe come out angling toward me. I took a broadside shot at 73yds. i took down my blind and went to get my deer..i then took it to the creek and fdressed it. i carried it to the butcher but i forget my shooting sticks in the field...i went back to get them and i looked at where i shot the deer because it had a huge entry wound. then i found some more blood and it wasnt from my deer(it dropped where it stood)..so needless to say, it seems to me that it was so foggy i didnt see the deer behind the doe i shot at,but i found the 2nd one 1st because it was hit right in the shoulder, the 1st deer actually ran down a trail 45yds and died.so the 1st deer i hit, the 250gr keith bullet went straight thru its ribs and then hit the 2nd deer square in the shoulder and knocked it down. the load i used was a (DE41magnum) handload.the gun was a SBH 10.5 barrel,44mag. MAN WHAT A DAY!!!!

I've always wondered how many deer were lost because a shooter never checked to make sure the path beyond their deer was clear.

I've seen guys shoot a deer out of a herd of cattle that was WAY too close to a cow.  If the bullet would have ricocheted just a little in the wrong direction, the cow would have been hit.

I've also seen guys shoot a doe with the fawn standing right behind it.

I've never seen it, but I've heard of guys waiting for 2 deer to line-up so they can hit both with a single shot.

Guess I'm just lucky there are enough deer here so I'm not tempted to take questionable shots
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

well i wasnt tempted to take a shot at 2 deer lined up beside each other. it was foggy and i only saw one deer thru my binoculars, and i only shot at one deer(i thought)....and even with open sights i was comfortable with that distance because i have practiced..

Agreed with Myronman. Strange how this stuff works out. Sometimes much more frequent than to make it a coincedence.
Congrat's: I guess this means we can come over anytime as you will have plenty of those slim-Jims? :-D  :D

A few years ago my little brother took 2 whitetails w/ one shot on purpose.  A friend of ours from CO was talking to some guys on the plane ride to WI who try for "combo" shots.  So Kyle went out and did it.  He not only waited for 2 of the doe to line up, but waited for the third one to be headed in my direction, which I shot while walking to see what Kyle got.  This was a 30-06 at 45 yards.  In fact those were the first 3 deer killed with my handloaded 2 bullets.  He was pretty excited anyway.
