Author Topic: HELPING TRIGGER PULL WITHOUT DISASSEMBLEY (Read 1394 times)

Everyone is talking about doing trigger jobs or the trigger is to heavy. I have never had to do a trigger job. Did you guys forget about what we learned from the old H&R site. Take your Handi (((MAKE SURE IT IS UNLOADED))) cock the trigger, then take your thumb and push on the back of the HAMMER ((sorry I did have trigger here but ment hammer)) and hold steady pressure there. While your holding forward pressure with your thumb, pull the trigger. Know I usally hold my thumb right around the top of the hammer so it does not go foward real fast and act as a dry fire. This procedure seems to clean any and all burrs from the sear and other moving parts in the trigger assembly. I have done this with every NEF or Handi (even shotguns) and there is a big difference in the trigger pull and how smoth it is. Does anybody remember this or am I in the TWILIGHT ZONE right now and lossing it. :shock: I'm sure there was others who was doing this.

BBF! Thanks for that tip about "self-polishing" the sear! I had not seen that in the old posts, and will be giving it a try on my Sportster, which otherwise had no need to return to NEF! My Pardner 12ga Tracker II has the absolute best trigger, my Handi 7-08Rem is not bad, But that Sportster needs help. I will post as to how it helps.

Cock the hammer, then put forward pressure on the hammer with your thumb, then pull the trigger. Do this a couple of times and it will clean any burrs or rough spots on the sear.

BBF, your not in the twilight zone. That tip was on the old H&R forum and as I recall many there had good luck polishing up their triggers with it....<><.... :grin:

1) Cock the hammer on a safe and empty gun.

2) Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

3) With the thumb of your trigger hand push the back of the hammer forard towards the muzzle of the gun.

4) Pull the trigger.

5) Do this a couple/few times to attempt to smooth up any rough sufaces. It has been said to work.

While you are pushing the hammer forward do you hold the hammer in place while working the trigger?

No, just cock the hammer and the apply forward pressure to the back of the hammer with your thumb. While your doing this pull the trigger. I usually do this 3 or 4 times. You can tell a difference.

yeah thats the point...youre adding pressure so when the trigger and hammer snap apart, it has more friction and rubs the mating point smooth. i just did it to mine and i can tell a small difference. yeah its a small difference but small for free is fine with me.

Just tried this on my 30-06 and it made a big difference. Tried it on the Ultra 25-06 and not so much a difference. Really pleased with the 30-06. Thanks. :grin: :grin:

might wanna be careful. it hurt my thumb so i used a screw driver to push and it came up and stuck in my forehead, about an inch from my eye. i am bleeding and sore, and feeling like a dumbass.

so be careful lol these guns can hurt ya.

I did this trick long ago on my .223 Ultra and it helped a bunch.

I just got a Handi in 7mm-08 Rem and the trigger on that gun is one of the best out of the box triggers I have ever pulled. I'll bet it's not more than 3.5 lbs (MAYBE 4 lbs) with absolutely no take up, no grit, and very little overtravel. I won't be messing with this trigger at all.

I don't know if you remember this, but one or two of the guys -- when I'd suggested this as a quick fix off a Paco Kelly revolver site -- tried to say that this would break pieces off the trigger / sear. That's because some loons' have put the hammer on a 1911 Model, Colt .45 ACP against a door frame for pressure while pulling the trigger -- to get a quick "G.I. trigger job"! Of course that will break parts! :eek: But, thumb pressure behind the hammer is not excessive -- except for NEF saying that their rifles should not be dry-fired! I recommend snap-caps when doing it with a Handi'.

No, you're not in the Twilight Zone, but apparently you don't remember all the crying that took place over this one either! :shock: You just can't help some people do things the easy way if it's not their own idea.

That is very a important thing to remember. If you don't have a snap cap just use an already fired case.

No problem guys. I'm glad it helped some, even if only a little. I never dry fire mine. That's why I always keep my thumb on the hammer while doing this. At best it is like cocking the hammer and then leaving it down while holding the trigger and pushing the firing pin out. No dry fire.

The hammer notch and the trigger sear are made from very good steel and are heat treated to be very hard. A file wont touch thios steel.

Rubbing two pieces of hardened steel together is not going to do much if anything.

Get the trigger honed and be done with it.

Fred is right, but on another note I have had heavy triggers and it seemed to lighten them. I think it was because of burrs. It can not hurt anything, so you really have nothing to loose by doing it.

Take the miniscule fraction of a square inch that is engaged at the sear, multiply its mathematical inverse by the pressure applied, and see if it doesn't add up to potentially damaged parts if some loon does it wrongly........(like on a door frame supposedly?). The pressure per square inch will be phenomenal! Reasonable thumb pressure will put a lot of force on the sear engagement areas and will work to remove some burrs. Too much thumb pressure will be a strain on the parts. That's why you get a snap-cap and do it repeatedly with the hammer under reasonable pressure from your thumb.

I guarantee you I can file down these parts with a little effort such that if my angles are not correct the trigger won't even engage. Sure, you can get a trigger honed, if you want; but some of us are wanting to carefully do it ourselves. I've used this trick, and I've done the polishing/filing routine. To each his own is all I'm saying.

I've done 2 handis using Raynor's trigger honing instructions, it doesn't take much polishing at all to get great results. I used a super fine ceramic lansky knife hone on mine, just 2-3 minutes on each surface and it's all that need be done. Doing the thumb pressure method should work also to a certain extent, although it doesn't help clean the parts at all as does an R&R. I also lubed the contact and bearing points with tetra grease per Rifle Basix trigger tuning instructions.
