Son's first deer (warning dead deer photo)
« on: November 09, 2004, 02:05:09 AM »
My 11 year old son took his first deer with a muzzle loader yesterday. T/C Renegade with open sights and shooting the traditional 50 cal patched ball. The season has been kind to us thus far and the freezer is filling up fast.

Have you ever seen seen a happier boy. I was proud of him. He hit a little high and to the right and as a result he had to track him "Indian style" from blood drop to blood drop. I let him do it all except dragging it out. That just about killed me, we hunt in a VERY hilly areas.

 :D
...for him there was always the discipline of steel.

They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.

He looks as smug as can be. GREAT SMILE and a very nice deer. Congrats to him, and with a patched ball. Good to see you are raising him right.

Congrats again and enjoy the moment.

Good deal!  I bet Dad is just a little proud of that boy.

I used a .50 Renegade as a youth myself.  I cheated and used Maxi-balls though.  A lot of doe tags were filled with that rifle but never a buck.

I've always said that the best thing about a real muzzleloader is that you drill a 1/2" hole through the boiler room and you've got a deer.  They don't usually drop at the shot but it makes for a nice blood trail which I think is a lot of fun when you know it was a good hit.  Our muzzleloader season is in December so we usually have a nice tracking snow which helps too.

That's a fine buck and the lad ought to be proud!!!  Nice set of horns and that'll be some tasty eats for the family.  Well done.

Congrats to both of you, wish I could have been there. There is nothing like being there for a kids first deer (or whatever), I was with both my sons when they killed there first deer and I don't know who was happier them or me, I've also been there for several of my friends kids first deer (if you ask they WILL let you borrow them) and every time it takes me about a week to stop smiling. A friend of mine's dad brought a 16 year old great nephew with him one time who had never been deer hunting and didn't have a gun, we fixed him up with all the stuff that he needed and I went with him (he was using my favorite rifle) well he killed a big doe and he was so happy that after I showed him how to field dress it we got a picture of him kissing her on the nose (I laughed for a week) Now if I can just find a kid who hasn't killed his first deer to take hunting this year I'll have another great year. Keep up the good work. rugerman
