I have not had a chance to shoot it yet. I sighted in my Savage 300 WSM, Ultra Hunter with stainless 243 barrel, and my TC G2 with 14'' 7-30 waters barrel. Sadley I just have not had time. I did take my 6-24x42 Tasco Mil-dot and rings of my 22 mag sportster and put it on the 223 barrel. It should be close on paper to were it will not take to long to sight in. I'm kinda excited about hunting coyotes with the 223 and 243 Handi after deer season. I guy I know, that comes in to our business to get his oil changed, has a electronic caller that I'm going to borrow for a month or two. Hopefully I can really try that 223 barrel out. Watch out yotes, I gunnin for ya!

I like that Tasco scope... I currently sport the one without mil-dot on my Rem 700 ADL in .223 You won't be sorry its on your Handi. Let me know how it sights in after you hit the range.

Now my question about the mil-dot is this: If you are zero'd at 100 where will the next dot be zero'd at and so on with that Tasco. I've been thinking about that one for my 22-250.

The mil is one onethousandth of the distance. 100 yards is 3600 inches so each mil setting is 3.6 inches. Most scopes must be set at the pre set power for this to work directly. On my scope the pwer setting for direct conversion is 12x. Each dot will move the impact 3.6 inches at 100 yards (in the opposite direction of the dot: the first dot below the cross hair raises the impact 3.6 inches at 100)

You will need a set of ballistic tables or a program to determine where the distance this adds to the range.

The mildot can also be used to estimate the range. You need to have a good idea of the size of an object near the target. For example, an 8 inch paper plate is just over 2 dots tall at 100 yards. If it is at an unknown distance, I can count the dots and prorate them to determine how far away it is. If it is only half a dot tall it is about 400 yards away. With ballisics, you then can use an appropriate dot to hold on it.

The way I understand the Mil-dot system. It would be close. I'm going to zero my 223 at 100 yards ( have to go back to my buddies cabin and clear me a couple spots to shot that far) then find a place I can shot 200 yards to try the 2nd dot. I really like the Mil-dot scope.

I do appreciate the lesson on the use of Mil-Dots... I have never owned one but always wanted to, because just as you explained it, is what I understood from some reading I've done on it. I just never asked the questions before about them.

My aquired targets when I practice for Prairie Dogs, will be bowling pins painted brown/tan set at differant distances around the upper pasture. For gophers will be surveyor stakes because they are about the same width and staking them down you can place them like they are just half out of the hole, or fully standing up looking around. :lol:

I diffently have lots to keep me busy. I did not even mention the Savage 30-30/20 gauge or the Rossi 357 mag that I reamed to a 357 Maximum. I should have plenty to keep me busy. I still want a NEF reamed to a 445 Supermag, but will waite to see if they come out with the 500 S&W. I really like to have a 500 S&W over a 445. Just have to waite and see.
