New Toy......7-08
« on: November 12, 2004, 03:31:23 AM »
I picked up the new Handi in 7mm-08 a couple of days ago.  I found some load information for it, but was just wondering if anyone had any pet loads.

Initially, I'll be loading a 120 grain Speer soft point in Remington cases and with CCI LR Primers for my daughter (12 years old) to hunt deer with.

Any loads that have worked for others would be appreciated.

thanks.

IMR 3031...start 41.0 grains....max...45 grains...vel...2971fps...3195fps...

IMR4064...start 41.0 grains.....max45.0 grains...vel...2812fps...3040fps...

IMR 4320...start 40.0 grains....max 44.0 grains....vel..2686fps...2873fps...

Those are straight from the Speer#13 manual from a 24" barrel...I tried all of them when I had my 7-08...and all of them worked rather nicely...

Hey Wlscott, here's a youth load that should be the ticket.

Thanks guys.  I'll probably be going with Varget or BLC2 because I have lots of it around.  I am really looking forward to rifle season and hunting with my daughter.

Wlscott.
You picked out one of the best deer rifles ever. Both the 120gr and 139 gr Hornady Interlock are the ones have used for years.

H4350 and H414 are the powders I found to be the best performers with most bullet weight up to 154/160gr.

The sloping shoulder on the 08 needs to be watched because they flow a lot and a .003" head space must be maintained in a Handi. That means FL sizing each time you reload.

I thought I would revisit this topic and let everyone know how things are going with the 7mm-08.

I am loading with Varget right now.  I started with 42.0 and worked up in half grain increments to 45.0 grains.  The 42.5 grain load seems to be pretty accurate, but this barrel doesn't like to be shot clean, nor does it seem to like to be shot hot.  The first two rounds out of a clean barrel were scattered, with the last three within an inch of each other.  I have yet to shoot the hotter loads.  I'll probably have my daughter shooting either the 42.0 grain load or the 42.5 grain load.

As far as the gun goes, Leftoverdj sent me a youth stock for it (I hope you didn't want it back dj  ).  The only scope I had laying around was an old Simmons 44MAG 4-12X44mm.  I had 'sperimented with home made camo coating with this scope about a year ago, so it has a desert themed pattern on it.  I got a wild hair when I got DJ's stock in, and decided to do a camo pattern on the forearm, and buttstock.  I finished it today, and it looks pretty darn good if I do say so myself.  I'll get some pictures posted as soon as I can.

I'll be doing some more shooting tomorrow, so I'll keep everyone posted on how it's going.  My daughter should be shooting off of the sticks tomorrow also.
