Ruger 77/44 - what kind of accuracy
« on: November 10, 2004, 04:13:41 AM »
I am looking at the Ruger 77/44 for a short, hard hitting woods gun.  I have already had an original Ruger 44 Semi auto carbine and a new Ruger semi auto carbine. both gave <2.5" 100yd groups, but i sold both due to jamming/feeding problems.  How accurate are the 77/44.  I assume at least as accurate as the semi-auto.  Thanks for the advice.

I have an article on hand in which the 77/44 was tested. The accuracy at 50 yds with conventional factory ammo  from 180 - 240 grains ranged from 1.50 - 2.13" in accuracy for 5 shot groups.

With 250 and 275 factory loads the accuracy @ 50 yds was 1.68 for both. At 100 yds the accuracy avg was 2.13 - 2.50".

Two handloads with a 225 Barnes and a 280 Swift - 1.13 - 1.50 @ 50 yds and 2.25 - 2.38 @ 100yds.

rusty;

I owned one about 3 years ago. I was not pleased with it at all. It seemed that no matter what I put through it, handload or factory, the groups would stay around 4 inches or maybe a little more for five shots at 100yds. Probably acceptable from the factory but not for me.
Also, the way the scope mounts (Ruger's own factory) were placed, it made it difficult to install a smaller power scope. I even bought the Ruger extenison rings for it, but still was not happy.  :roll:
Good Luck.

Thank You rusty75

I'm looking at buying one myself and was going to ask the same question :grin:

I'm lookiing at the K77/44 RSP for $390.00 out the door.

Was thinking  it would be a great woods gun. But have to sell my Savage in .270Win. first before I get it.

I purchased a s/s 77/44 earlier this year for my wife. I have only fired my own reloads from 180gr jhp plinker loads on up to max 300gr XTP loads. As long as I keep the barrel clean I group about 3 inches @ 100 yards. I mounted a Leupold Vari X 11 1-4X scope with the factory supplied rings. I can't shoot any better with only a 4x scope @ 100 yards. My eyes are starting to not work good enough any more.
