Accuracy vs manufacturer ???

I've read in posts on this and other forums that Single shot break open type rifles are not  as accurate as Bolt actions.  Fred you have mentioned this about the .223 and other calibers. I understand you and others on this forum have much more experience with This type of firearm but I get excellent accuracy from mine at the distances I chose to shoot.

 I question why you feel/know that the 223 is only good to about 250 yds or so accuracy wise. is it the 1-12" rifiling or is there some other reason(s) behind what is being said.

In the same area of reasoning how far will the .308 in say an ultra hunter be useful for? Am I limited by mechanical liabiliaties of the design to 400 yards and under or can I make a 600yd shot with confidence in my rifle and caliber.

I limit myself to 300 yds with the 308 because of my own abilities but bench rested and shooting at paper I would like to test my skills. I've had training and coaching from some excellent shooters and they tell me I should buy a better rifle to become a bettter shooter?

I voted 200 yards because, Here in central Virginia, most Deer are taken within 75 yards and because of that I hunt with a .41 revolver or other pistol caliber firearms. I believe 300 yards is a range that is attainable with my .30-06 and perhaps my 6mm Remington, but such shots here are rare so most of the time those "reach out and touch em rifles" stay in the safe.

250 to 300 yards is really the limit for a .223 in any rifle the bullet is just to small and case capacity isn't there, My .243 handi shoots very well to 300yrds but I haven't tried any further mostly unnessesary here in KY.
Bolt guns are mostly more accurate but handis can be tuned to shoot very well also.

250 yrds is just a nice distance for a whee 223. If you can do better by alll means do so, no arguments from me.

Most of the shots that I take at coyotes with my .223 have been at 300 yards and under.  I have made shots over three hundred yards with a .223 when I was in the military.   I prefered a .308 for the longer shots, but I did use a .233 out to 600 yards on occasion.  If I still trained like I did in the military, I would not hesitate to take a longer shot at a coyote with either of my .223's (Colt AR15 and an Ultra Varmint).

    I shoot more now than I ever did in the Army of the 80's with the budget restrictions and all that they had it was hard for noncombat/rear echolon type units to get ammo for zero/qualification and schedule range time around the combat/reserves/NG units. Sucked that even NG units could bump you off the range because their time was so limited.

  I reload for the .223 and my accuracy at 200 (farthest range available) is in the 9/10X ring of a 25 yd slowfire pistol target. I'm hoping the .308 once I get a load will do better. Mind you I am not complaining I just like the idea of striking terror into the hearts of yotes/coydogs any where close to my dads farm. Seems they like to eat mutton as much as I like deer.
