Thinking of switching to a PCP...
« on: July 17, 2005, 09:39:18 AM »
I was in Airguns of Arizona the other day and I am amazed at what they had to offer. I could have spent thousands of dollars in there. I am now looking hard at the Daystate Harrier X2, and the FX Cyclone. Anyone know anything about these two guns?

I'm thinking of switching too, I bought an HW97 in 20cal for plinking and pest control around the yard, had it tuned, and now my elbow starts talking to me after cocking it a dozen or so times :?.  I'm thinking of selling it and buying an Air Arms 400EB in 22cal.

I looked up the gun you were talking about. Very nice. I am also going to get a .22 caliber this time. I had a .20 and it was hard work finding pellets. Here are the guns I am looking at.

I like the Daystate design better but the Cyclone is lighter and probably better suited to hunting.

Before you do anything, I think you need to read this and do some research on those guns.

Air Arms.  Excellent rifles, very accurate and powerful when purchased in the American version.  I know I really love my S410 Xtra but I haven't heard of the 400 EB.  Went to Air Arms web site and they have no mention of that model there.

ABaker & Haywire,

How do you plan on charging the PCP that you get?  Scuba tank, hand pump or air compressor?  Lawdog

Thanks for the heads up Dave. I am joining the boycott of AOA. If that many people have been burned by that place I am staying away.  :noway:

I haven't heard of the 400 EB

The 400 is the single shot version of the 410.  Exactly same action but no magazine.  I am rough on things and thought I'd keep it simple.  I was going to use a scuba tank, but heard that you only get about 6 fills before the tank pressure drops below desireable levels so a pump might be the next best thing as long as it isn't a hand pump (more elbow pain there). A foot pump would be ideal, preferably with the pre- and post- humidity filters.

The new S400 EB is the same S400 E action but with power adjustment and trigger block safety.  It comes on a new stock beautifully checkered on the pistol grip and fore end area.  It is so new that even Air Arms doesn't have updated their website with this model info.  You may see detailed pictures of this model on SS website

I like that Air Arms S410E. What about the Carbine version? I am impressed with the price and the numbers. I was wondering how many shots you get per charge? Also what do you use it for? I was thinking about getting the hand pump unless it is too much work.

I know about the difference between the 400 and the 410 it's the EB I hadn't ever heard of and it's not listed on the Air Arms web page.  Lawdog

Yep, It's the extra power, adjustable power version. It has a preset low, med, and high switch on it.  The regular 400E has been discontinued according to SS.  I'm still debating this one.  There would be several hundred dollar outlay to do the conversion, assuming that I get a good price for the PW tuned 97.

Abaker, I live near Turf Paradise. I've made the trip down to AoA several times, and I've had a good buying experience, as well as a return experience. There's NO question that the owner is salesperson, and a businessman. It is his livelihood after all. That said, he's also an enthusiast, and not ignorant of the wide range of product lines that he offers. I also find him to be very personable, and he is a family-man.

For what little bit extra we Zonies have to pay in sales-tax, it's well worth it seeing as how you can 'try-before-you-buy', and get the privilege of so MUCH variety at one location. Plus, there's nothing like a face-to-face relationship.  Perhaps I'm inclined to cut someone more slack, as I'm in the sales-support field. However, I wouldn't give up on them just yet.

That said, there's a lot extra to buy with PCPs. Pumps, and/or tanks, plus the cost of re-fills. Why don't you go back once more and pick the owner's brain on those guns of the "dark-side", LOL? That Tech-Star by BSA is a HECKUVA good start.
Rest in Peace, Mr. President.

Actually the "E" series has been discontinued.  The "B" stands for beech stock.  Go to the Air Arms site I posted, http://www.air-arms.co.uk/S400S410.htm,  to see the different models that Air Arms offers today.  In my opinion Air Guns of Arizona is an excellent outfit to do business with.  I bought my Air Arms  :D S410Xtra from them.  Lawdog

So far I have taken a goodly number of Ground Squirrels, around 25 Tree Squirrels, 50 plus Brush Bunny's(personal favorite) and one Tom Merriam Turkey(this last Spring).  I recharge the cylinder after two magazine loads(10 shots per load) or every 20 shots.  According to the owners manual the S410Xtra is supposed to get around 35(30 - 35) full power shots per charge but I have never tried it to see.  The only time I have adjusted the power down is when shooting light weight pellets(H&N Match or JSB Predator(just started trying these on birds and getting some excellent results BUT only at lower power levels)) for target or pest bird control.  Lawdog
