The folks over at the Mossberg and Sons site will be most helpful - the company has been around for a very long time and they are good folks to deal with.  Good luck.

I've got a 16 Ga 390kb w/ 2rd magazine and factory poly choke. Shoots great and is in good shape. I've used it for rabbit and squirrel. My dad has a 20 ga bolt action that has screw on chokes. He bought his new in the 50's and it's taken just about everything you can hunt Delaware except waterfowl.

Just a quick attention to detail. My 16 gauge does have an adjustable screw choke.

Got my first deer with my dad's 195 Mossy in 1974. Here is what I know about 'em.
They made many model variations over more than 40 years, and the guns were also sold by Monkey Wards, Sears, Western Auto, ect under their own brand names.
The 1xx series is older than the 3xx series. The earliest .410 was the model 83, this became the 183. The last two numbers indicates the gauge; 83=.410, 85= 20, 90=16, 95=12. D models had choke tubes, K models had Mossberg's version of the Poly Choke, the C-Lect-Choke.
As usuall with common "working guns" these do not have much resale value. An interesting and somewhat rare Mossy was the 595. With it's 18 inch barrel and 4 round box sticking out it is pretty mean looking.

I have a JC Higgins bolt 12 ga, tube fed., Close to the Mossberg. Someone told me Mossy n=made them for Higgin's. I don't know if this is a fact or not. Just a neat 'ole gun.

JC Higgins was the store brand for Sears (as was Ted Williams).  All of them were made by other companies.  I know that Mossberg did make a lot of them, but definatley not all (my father's .22LR is marked Ted Williams but was actually made by High Standard).

So I assume the Mossberg 585 would be a series 5 20 gauge by this number system.
I know where there is a three inch 20 gauge Mossberg 585 for around $50.00 in very good condition with a Poly choke on it. The only defect I can see is that it does not have the rear sight that I think was originally soldered on the receiver.
I have been thinking of getting it to set up for my son as a cheap turkey and tree rat gun. How do the Poly chokes group? I know most go from wide open to full choke.

riddleofsteel, for 50 bucks I would buy it! The original adjustable chokes work very well, and are almost worth that much alone. For your purpose you would not miss the rear sight, but you might want one for shooting slugs. I believe they are available, but they are not that hard to make by hand.

The JC Higgins bolt action shotguns were made for sears by H & R I believe. The 12 gauges are not safe to shoot. the locking luggs on the bolt is not strong enough for a 12 gauge. The 16 and 20s are fine because there is more metal there.

If you call Sears and ask them about the recall on them they will give you a number to call. You call the number and give them your address and they send you a box to mail them the bolt and they send you a check for $160.00 if I remember right .

I had one of this for years. I loved the gun for squirrel hunting but when I found out about the recall I sent the bolt back for the money. A guy I know would go to flea markets and such and buy them and send them back for the money. You could but them for $50 or $60 . I would like to find a nice 16 or 20 gauge to hunt with.

Bolt action shotguns never had locking lugs on the bolts. The bolt handle cams over a THICK web of steel exactly like a rimfire rifle. Before the introduction of the rifled bolt action shotgun and the in-lines, I knew of many gunsmiths that were retrofitting the J. C. Higgens, Mossberg and Savage/Stevens shotguns with good rifled barrels. I never heard or read of a recall on the J. C Higgens Model 10.

Very interesting. I see it's dated March 1999. If this is legitimate, it's a good find! I'm surprised that this wasn't published in any magazines and if it was, I don't recall seeing it. MagnumJH, my appology and thanks for the advice.
