Author Topic: Tried the Winchester 45 grain bulk ammo. (Read 814 times)

Hey everyone.Tried the Winchester varmint pack yesterday.How about a 2 inch 30 shot group at 100 yards.Do you think this is accurate enough? :grin: I shot this out of my UV .223.I also shot some Remington UMC 55 grain fmj ammo and it hits the same point of impact?I shot this group out of the back of my truck off of two sandbags resting right in front of the trigger guard.The rifle is stone stock no o ring,factory out of the box trigger,And a tasco 3-9x40 tasco world class.The 55 grain UMC ammo grouped very well also?

Sorry,I guess that was a bit of a run on sentence.I meant that I snugged the trigger guard up to the sandbags.I thought the winchester bulk ammo shot fairly decent considering a truck tailgate isn't the best shooting platform.What i can't figure out is how a heavier bullet would have pretty much the same point of impact.Is the Winchester ammo loaded a little hotter than normal,because it seemed to have a little more pop to it.

Do not know of any 223 that the Winny White Box does not do well out of. Group sounds GREAT for that many rounds and your rest.

Just could not pass that one up. Yup, the WW white box 223 stuff shoots pretty good out of my UV also. I chronoed (is that a word) some the other day. Don't believe that 3600 fps stuff. My rifle and chrono said avg of 3450 or so. However.....the WW white box 22-250 45 JHP stuff chrono's a bit over 4,000, 4093 to be specific, out of my bolt rifle. Must be the micro groove barrel that allows the bullet to slide down the barrel so easy.

I thought you weren't supposed to shoot hot or military ammo out of HANDI'S. Or am I on the wrong trac?

V8r did mention that ammo and should not be shooting it but everyone else was talking about the .223 commercial ammo. The .223 white box loaded by Winchester that they are talking about is not the 5.56 Nato round you are thinking about. It is loaded to sporting pressures and is safe in your Handi.

As for his same point of impact he was very lucky. He had a heavy bullet at way too much pressure verses a lighter bullet at the proper pressure. That is a good way to blow something (or someone) up. NEF/H&R does not say to not shoot that stuff just to hear themselves talk.

Guys,last time I checked it says 55 grains or less for best accuracy.I only use factory loaded ammo,because I don't own a reloading press.Why would any factory ammo be unsafe in a handi that is marked .223 remington? The 55 grain ammo I was shooting was Remington UMC .223 remington ammo,not 5.56 NATO.What I was saying was,that the Winchester ammo seemed like it had a little more recoil than other .223 ammo I have fired.I have fired lots of .223 ammo,I have a military ammo can full of spent .223 cases.I have owned 4 rifles in .223.I have never fired any of the military ammo,so I don't see where someone would get the idea I was talking about military ammunition.I would never suggest anything to anyone that is unsafe,or do anything that would possibly put myself in danger.Have you ever had a case rupture in your face before?I most certanly have,and trust me it is no fun.It was a factory loaded .44 mag cartridge out marlin lever action rifle.Someday I will post pictures for the non believers. :?

95Road King is the one that got the ball rolling on the military/hot ammo stuff, bad on him!!! :wink: He probably saw FMJ and jumped.

The remington ammo had fmj bullets.Sorry,I just got a little tweaked out,I don't like it when people jump to conclusions. :grin:

I thought the white box .223 ammo was NATO!! MY error And sorry.
Not trying to start anything. I don;t own a .223 but see the white boxe's at the range all the time. I'll have to read one. I saw couple guy's shooting an AR-15 using that stuff. That threw me off.

95 Road King,it wasn't your statement that tweaked me out.When Major made the statement and said ( v8r did mention that ammo and should not be shooting it) it rubbed me the wrong way a little.I bought the winchester ammo at walmart.I have owned at least one rifle in .223 for 18 plus years,it was nothing you said that bothered me.If someone has a question they should ask it,there is no such thing as a stupid question.Only use ammunition that the firearm is marked for.There is a difference between 5.56 Nato and .223 and I know this.I have to admit the millitary stuff is priced low and it would be nice if it were interchangeable,but why take the chance of injuring yourself?I had a cartridge blow up on me once(that I had no control over,it was factory loaded)and don't plan on that happening to me twice by making a stupid decision. Happy shooting and be safe.
