1911 holster
« on: August 23, 2004, 08:44:56 AM »
Without spending a bunch of money, what is a good, solid leather holster that is suitable for casual open carry.  It needs to be comfy, so no IWB's.  I like the pancake style with wide belt loops.  I also need to be able to get one without waiting for weeks on end.  Just something basic that holds the gun snuggly and it should be on the IDPA list.

Thanks.

My favorite pancake holster is made by Alessi (Buffalo, NY). They are a bit hard to find but offer excellent quality at a modest price. Don Hume (Miami, OK) makes some real nice stuff too, as does Bianchi (Temecula, CA).

Be VERY careful with holsters with hammer-blocking thumb straps for the M1911.  These things do not enhance safety, but they can force the safety OFF in the course of normal body movements.

Dillon LTD

I like the Dillon LTD.  Not exactly a pancake, but low profile, and doesn't have a thumb strap.  It formed to handle the high front sights on a lot of todays 1911's, and it looks good too.  It's about $50, and it's IDPA qualified.
