Only a rumor.......Maybe not
« on: November 16, 2004, 01:58:49 PM »
I thought the 500 S&W handi rifle was only a rumor but i was just searching gunbroker and there is a dealer that has them listed on his website. The website is www.bsporting.com it lists them as out of stock but this may mean that my recently acquired 44 mag might just go up for sale. They list them for 220.03 which isn't too bad. Is there anyone else that would also like to have one or is it just me lusting over this caliber. (drool)

It is indeed not a rumor, Sports South shows it in the internet gun catalog. Model #? What else but an SB2-500...   None in stock, though.

I didn't find any for a rifle, Buffalo Bore's hot loads are 400gr/1675fps/2500ft/lbs. I doubt they will approach the upper 45-70 level 2 loads.

Hornady lists their 500 S&W 350gr ammo at 1900/2805(muzzle)  1656/2131(50yd) 1439/1610(100yd)

For comparison, PMC lists their .45-70 350gr ammo as 2025/3167(muzzle)
1678/2187(100yd) 1390/1502(200yd)

The 500 S&W are more coparable to level 1 .45-70 loads.

The remington 300gr .45-70 ammo is listed as 1810/2182(muzzle)
1497/1492(100yd)

OK
I gotta weigh in here.  Balistics wise I see no adavntage over the good old 45-70 on any count.  I can see the larger meplat being somewhat more effective but not by much.

The big drawback to me, is cost of ammo.  The 45-70 has a LOT of bullets available for it out there.

I guess you guys want a new toy, I'll go back to the old 45-70.

Enjoy them!

Are these numbers for equal barrel lengths or are the 500 S&W numbers from a six inch barrel?

Also are these numbers for factory ammo loaded with quicker burning handgun powder or for loads using rifle powder that will take advantage of a rifles longer barrel length?

Well, I got tired of all the talk and no confromation. So, I called customer service. The guy said "HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT IT". He said they are trying to keep it hush and not leak the info. I should have told him "you did a great job at keeping it hush" :) He said they have the blanks ((by the way they are GREEN MOUNTAIN BLANKS)) but the production run will be a while yet. So, since I called and confirmed it, I GET THE FIRST ONE :-D and how about you guys chip in and buy it for me. :-D I'll let you shoot it. I promise.

Well...if they are Green Mountain blanks...maybe Marlin will be doing the rifeling on it...and maybe they will use the Ballard type...wouldn't that be a hoot....

I just called H&R and they gave me a completely different answer than they gave BBF. The guy i talked to was a wise ass too. Said that it was JUST A RUMOR and wouldn't say anything else about it. Seems to me if they want to sell rifles they ought to have some better people in cutomer service. But hey, i'm not gonna let one jackass stop my from buying a new gun.

The guy I talked to was the same one I have talked to like 20 times in the last month and a half. Super nice guy. He sounds like he's is in his 50's. The guy even ask me how it got on there website. He said he had never been on the website but it should not be on there yet. That info and telling me R&D was researching the 500 and another caliber and he said they were working on 2 new calibers. Plus, they just brought down barrel blanks, which are made my Green Mountain. I told him it was not on their website but on several distributors websites. Same ole story, keeps us in the dark. He sais no one was suppose to know about it. He also told me they just got a shipment of stainless 22-250 barrels from Green Mountain. They do not want to tell us till the last minute. I'm sure they would probally get in trouble, but lets face it. The distributors know, so someone there leaked information. We'll just have to waite and see.
