300 gr cast
« on: November 19, 2004, 01:33:24 AM »
Man this is driving me nuts.
Have a Marlin 1895 Guide gun , The 458 diameter bullet wont load as all manuals say. The manuals say an OAL of 2.205 and this flat nose cast bullet will not load till I set it at 1.400.
This will probley cause pressure that would blow my mind apart.
Does anyone have any ideas why?
It loads factory fine , but this cast will not.
The cast bullet, after being knocked out of the barrel, measures .456
Is this the size I should look for in a cast bullet?
Would a .405 have a different design,
this is the day the Lord has made, enjoy!

My manual shows 2.550" OAL and my 1895 works very well at 2.559" with a 300 gr. and 2.574" with a 420 gr. The length of the case is listed at 2.105", so I really don't know about the 1.400 that you speak of.

You really need to check the throat diameter to be sure, but .458" should be just fine in a bore that measures .456". My cast are sized .459"; the bore is .458"; the throat is .460". Hope this helps.-JDL

the bullet your using is probably a bore riding bullet for 458 lands.. on the smaller bore this weill not load under the smaller rifling size.. especially in a lever where there is no ramming pressure.. you may need a smaller nose design for your gun..  if you go to the cb cast bullet list those guy have done everything with every thing and can help.. http://www.schuetzen.net/cblist.htm   its an old list that is heavily moderated from the old days of horrible flame wars, and some work to get signed up, but belive me if your going to cast bullets its theeee place to go. you may also have microgroove problems next, but these guys can fix that too....    good luck dave.
