I want an accurate rimfire rifle...which?

Ive got a budget of about 400-500 dollars for a decent rimfire. Also any advantage to the .177 caliber over the .22 rimfire?

Pete, welcome to GBO! :D  The .17HMR and .17MachII are .172", not .177". They are in general more accurate than most .22 caliber rifles and definately flatter shooting especially at 100yds, although at a higher cost for ammo. For your price range, a used Anshutz is not out of the question, but a new CZ452 is easy in the $300-$350 range. A Marlin 917V, since this is a Marlin forum, will run $180, a 917VS about $280, both are excellent shooters with a little trigger work or a Rifle Basix drop in adjustable trigger. The CZ comes with an adjustable trigger but still leaves a bit to be desired and is easily fixed with a Brook's trigger kit for $10-15 or an Automated Solutions adjustable sear for $60-70. The Ruger 77/17 will run $450 or so and needs trigger work and may or may not shoot well. The Savage 93R17  models run $170-$280 and shoot just as well as the others with the exception of the Anshutz which is a bit more accurate out of the box than the others, and needs no trigger work.

You might want to consider a .22mag.  Can't beat a Marlin for the price, and with your budget there would be enough left over for a decent scope & some ammo.  Good luck!

Depending on what you intend doing with it!
 
   Either of the foregoing replys could be correct!
   
 In my experience, owning both and hunting groundhogs with both:

   1) The .17 HMR is more accurate and more flat shooting than the .22 mag.

   2) The .22 mag has more " knock down punch" and the rounds are less expensive, although I suspect that when there are more .17 rifles around and more .17 rounds are being made...the price gap will close , somewhat...

Ditto - The 17HMR is more accurate that a 22 mag. and most 22LRs but cost a lot to shoot.  The jury is still out on accuracy of the 17 Mach 2.  but expect it to also out shoot most 22LRs.

However, I'd recommend you try a 22LR bolt action rifle with a heavy barrel and get a good scope on it.  May can get by for $400 to $500 total.  But even if spend a little more you will save on ammo cost for rest of your life!

i would get a marlin 7000 automatic ($161) when ordered from wal-mart.put a simmons 6*24*50 ao scope($69) and buy a cz 452 with the beechwood stock($209) it has very nice sights but i would also put the same scope i mentioned be4....both rifles are very,very accurate and inexpensive to shoot, so u will get more enjoyment out of em!! :wink:
