i have been trapping since i was ten and i have never had such trouble w/beavers..i have been trying to trap some at a spring by the house.and they keep gettin caught but chew thru the steel braided cable i use in all my set ups...it has always worked for me,even on coyotes. the only luck i have had is shootin them at dark..i shot one in late evening w/a 44mag revolver(it weighed 42lbs) and the next day my buddy shot one in the same spot w/a contender 7x30(it weighed 46lbs).since then the beavers have moved up the creek and have another mound and dam built...so what do i do i dont want to hunt beavers i want to trap them and the water is to shallow for a drounding cable(especially these big boys)

I use 330s and make castor mounds, no worries about drowning then.
The only thing is,shooting beaver can make the rest of the colony suoer cautious.
My buddy mike took some pics on our line,problem is they wouldnt post on here.Some of these,were of the way I set up for beaver.

yeah it definitely makes them wary...what exactly do u do to make your castor mounds

I gather a pile of mud,place it on the shore a foot or more behind my 330.Then I just place a glob of my beaver lure on top of the mound.
If I can find someone that is able to post those pics,I will try and get them up.

i would try my 330s first but if they are stirred up from the shooting this may not work, u may have to go in blind for them. u didnt say how deep the water was but i have effectively drown beavers in slides by shortening the chain with trap wire. I have shortened chain to as little as 3-4" and drown beavers every time in as little as 20" of water. now here is the "catch" you must set for the front foot, the stake and anchor must be very secure and the slide wire must be tight and i use 11 ga. wire. if i couldnt conform to these standards i wouldnt set this way. i use #3 coils or #4 d. longs for these jobs. with this set up even 50lb have fallen to me caught by the front foot the chain being short and their front feet so close th their head they can come close but just cant get to the surface for air remember that everyhting must be very secure or they will get to air- good luck.

What diameter or make of cable are you using, also?
I snare a lot of beaver in 3/32" and I run a lot of 3/32" slide cables, too. Sometimes there isn't deep enough water nearby and the slide is just to get them out to deeper water even if its not enough to drown them. But still, I don't ever recall a cable chewed through.
Just curious, that's all.
Only other question I could think of for you would be frequency that you run your traps, especially if you are not drowning them or using #330s for immediate kills?

3/32 cable and i check the traps every morning at sunrise
