i have been wanting to get a new varmint rig. i had a .223 encore pistol but had to sell it to get college books(heartbreaking right..). i would like to get a .223 because ammo is cheap and i live in northern alabama...my shots can vary from 50yds. to 250yds....i will mainly be coyote and fox hunting;occasionally crows. so what would my best bet be? i know i want stainless and i really dont care if it is a single shot or bolt...ADVICE PLEASE...thanks

You can spend more, up front, for a fancier gun; and you can spend a lot, after-market, to tweak a sub-par gun ... but I hear Savage is consistently most accurate out-of-the-box for the money.

Another vote for the NEF/H&R. Dont allow people to short change ya on em. They have been called "cheap" "junk" and "POS." Its not true, they rock, they are in-expensive, and they are probably more accurate than you could ever be.

I for one had a very unreliable H&R, it was an ultra-comp in 30-06. Some times it shot well and other times not well at all (and yes, I am a very good marksman). I'm stuck with a gun that I don't want and my dealer won't buy it for nothing.

I would suggest you look at the following models:

CZ 527 Varmint Laminate
Savage 40 Varmint Hunter Series
Savage 12 Series Varmint

On the higher side try Tikka, Ruger, or Remington.

I have a handi rifle by New England Firarms and I love it. its a .223 singleshot and it only cost me 205.99 last christmas at Sportsmans Warehouse. I love it. I have taken a yote and hundreds of p dogs with it. I would get another one if I had the money. Hank.

Since you stated FOR your MONEY. A savage Bolt action. They have improved them 100% over the last few years. I have shot & seen groups that would make you shake your head using a Savage. To me & a lot of others they are the best bang for your buck.

My vote goes to Savage. Some people say they ain't pretty, but the groups they shoot proves that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I too would vote for a savage. get one of the new ones with the accu trigger. I have a model 10 fp-le2 and I love it I think this is the best triger that I have even seen.

You can get one for around $350 check the sports authority and dicks sports.

well guys i think you read my mind. i have been seriously thinking of a savage. i would like a model 40 in 223. but i want stainless do they offer the 40 in ss? i know they do in m12. by the way whats the $ range?

If you are not stuck on 223.
I have a Savage Model 111 that is in 270Win that has less than 20 rounds threw it.
I'm trying to sell it right now on GB classifieds.
Asking $275 that includes Redfield one piece mount, Redfield rings.

For $275 includes shipping to your FFL.

If you reload I have a spare set of dies I'll throw in.
(If you do reload I have some bullets that I can give ya also)

Rifle was bought for the Action but never used. My 6mm-06 project was killed when I purchased a 204 Ruger

I would also go with the savage.I donot know if the model 40 is in stainless.I personally would not want the stainless for coyote or crow hunting or I would camo tape it.Crows can see very well.

I see you are in athens AL I hunt north AL and south TN.Coyotes and crows are the only things i hunt.If you like drop me an e-mail we may can meet for a hunt or two.Right now i'am doing a little ADC work in south TN.

Most of my AL hunting will start in FEB after the deer hunters leave the woods.

yeah if i get a savage i will try to get a matte ss. and i will also drop you an e-mail i would really like to go on a hunt with an experienced hunter...(ive only killed 5 yotes but numberous crows)

I too am in the market for a new 223.

I am not stuck on stainless for this gun. I am looking for a tack driver on a good looking piece of wood. I would really like a new winchester classic featherweight with the schnabel forend. Man, that thing is a looker! Unfortunately, they aren't made in 223 Rem. I am also looking at the CZ 527 American. I don't like the way the magazine juts down on that one though.

If you have to have stainless, check out the new Rem 700 LV SF. That is on my list too but it doesn't come with a stock that I like. Check it out though, it may be just what you want.
