I have a 2x7 bplex on a bf pistol in 7mm brm. real close to a waters if not identical. I shoot 160 gr sierra hpbt gamekings at 2200 fps. first dot is 160,second one 250 and the third is 330 yards. a friend has a 3x12 bplex on the same barrel that you have. it is real hard to use on 12 power unless you are on the bench at the range. the reticle was designed to use at the highest magnification. I have experimented with mine using the reticle at different magnifications and it gets a little confusing. eye relief on 12 is almost impossible without a rest

If you plan to hunt with this scope then get the 2x7. I have taken deer with it at 280 yards with no problems. its a whole lot easier to shoot on 7 than 12 off hand. if you get the 3x12 and you cant use the extra power because of field conditions and have to back it down to 7 or 8 then why not get the 2x7. works real good for me

benchrest shooting is a different ballgame altogether. 3x12 all the way but don't get the bplex. get the regular reticle with turrets.

I know a lot a people who like the bushnell 2x6 pistol scope. the eye relief doesn't change throughout the power range. I just like a burris better than anything else on the market.

leupold makes a very fine rifle scope but they fall short for me when it comes to pistols. just my 2 cents.  BRU

2x7 or 3x12 scope

I fully agree with the previous post.   General all around scope would be a 2x7 or 2x6.  I  prefer the Burris 2x7 because of the slightly bigger field of view.    I really wish they had the constant eye relief like the Bushnell 2x6 has.    I also have several 3x12 Burris but use them strictly for shooting off of a bench, such as at the range or PD hunting.     I have however used successfully the 2x7 Burris on PD hunts out to 275 yds with 22-250 Pistol.  My experience with NC Star Scope was not good and I gave it away.

the 2x6 bushnell trophy ler is a good one. i been using one this season on my 300 win mag encore barrel. it worked for me, but i found the longer eye relief to be harder for me to use in field positions :?
i prefer the shortening eye relief for my shooting style.
i recommend it, if you like the constant eye relief.

my preference is the burris 2x7(21' field of view on 2x)........and the 3x12. can't help it, i love those 2 scopes
12x is good for target/bench shootin, and varminting situations where max field of view is not a concern. kinnda hard to come up with the extra $ at times though. :(

if that bushnell did shorten in eye relief.....i'd be tickled to death for the money.

Power of scopes

I have a new 3-12 with target knobs and I shoot mostly from a bench.  I keep the power between 7 & 8, other wise the scope makes me crazy and we don't need anymore of that crazies.  I have a fixed 10 power and it fits in the same category.  However, I have 4 others.  Two are the 2 to 7 powers and they are the my all time favorites.  I had elevation knobs put on both of them.  I have shot them for 15 years and tried to kill them and they will not die.  I've never noticed the eye relief changing on the 2-7s.  The 3 to 12 changes radically and it bothersome to me. I only bought the 3-12 recently because it had target knobs already on it.

I will only buy 2 to 7s or 2 to 6s.  I would like to try one of the 2 to 6 Bosch and Lomb scopes.  They don't come with target knobs and it my game, I prefer knobs.  Too bad you can't rent-a-scope for a week.

Well, that is my 50 cents worth on scopes.

Any high mag LER scope takes time to get used to.  I have used the 3-12 on 12 power consistently for both bench and field shooting (prone).  I shot over 400 round from the prone position at 12x with targets ranging from 200-800 yards this past August without any problems.  This was with a center-grip XP.  Rear grips with the 12x are easier than the center grips since most people need a extended base to move the scope further forward on center-grips like the XP-100.  Software like Exbal should allow you to change your magnification and use the ballistic plex reticle.  If not, you can choose the distance you want your last plex sighted in for and sight it dead on, then work your way forward and determine your other plex points.  Even with Exbal I confirm the software with shooting at the actual distances.  I have a number of 3-12's and I love them.  Everyone has their preferences, and this scope is not for everyone.  If you want high magnification though, it is the only scope that has a LER, unless you go with a Siebert conversion (14x & 20x LER's).
Harold,
Sorry I have not responded.  I did get your e-mail, I have not had the problem you mentioned to me.  I keep my magnification on 12 power when hunting and competing so I wouldn't have had the problem.   Once warmer weather comes again I will play around and see if I can replicate your scenario.   I would contact Larry @ Burris, tell him about it and ask if he will check it out himself.

I have both a 3-12 and a 2-7 and for hunting the 2x-7x is my favorite.  I rarely use the ballistic plex in the field.  For the bench I like it.  Most of the time in the woods I am using the 2-7 at a 4x setting.  I can acquire my target much faster.  For field hunting I like the 12X only if I have a sturdy rest.  For that I used a suggestion from a man in GA for a tree stand rest that pivots.

Overall they both have their place.  With the 12X you CAN turn it down and still function (it is nice to have that option), but I do like the 2-7 Burris the best.

By the way, You can't hit what you can't see.  The 12X does benefit you by providing up close and personal magnification-especially at 200yds.  My groups shrink at the gun range with a higher magnification.  Doesn't always benefit me while hunting, but for pinpoint accuracy the higher X's help.

another situation that might arise with this reticle is the ability to still see the hashs or dots on a field shot in those final minutes of shooting light.

I don't know if this will happen before legal hunting hours is over but the lower power would help in either scope.  Has anybody experimented with adjusting the magnification to see how much it effects your poi when using the reticle.  it would have to be a big difference just by looking through mine here in the garage.  BRU

Anytime you adjust magnification (say from 12x to 5x) and use the 3rd  (@ 12x 350 yards) plex it will change POI when moved to 5x.
