Looking for a new scope for a H&R ultra 223 to use for coyotes.
What I was wondering is if it is better to get one with AO. or not.
It seems there would be some fiddling with the AO trying to get it set to the proper range.As the range could be anywhere from 50 feet to 250 yards. during which time the coyote could see the movement and be gone.
Any input will help.

You will will be hard pressed to find a better scope for the 223 than a straight 6x of good quality. For hunting out to 250 yards there is no need for an AO lens. It just adds complexity, weight and bulk for no good reasons. Besides very few of the economy models will actually focus to what the graduations say.

Weaver, Sightron, Nikon, Burris and Leupold 6x scopes come to mind.

Ron98002: I agree with a quality 6X, but fixed powers can be hard to find. AO heads are not necessary for hunting. Anything, the vari-power adjustment ring, or the AO are just another break in the body of the scope for gas to leak out and moisture to get in. To a certain extent look how you use your rifle, are you willing to carry it to the blind in a case, or is it treated as a tool of a trade, some knocks are expected. If the latter is the norm, them pick your scope very carefully, with respect keeping thing rugged and simple.
I'd like to throw a vote in for Simmons if money is tight, I've had some real good luck with their service.

For general hunting out to 250 yds or so a 3-9x40 variable should be just fine. If you stay at 9 power and under there generally is no need for an AO. I have a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 on my 243 and have found it to be entirely adequate. Should be just the ticket for a 223. You can get the Trophy for under a $100 most places.

If your set up in a blind...and have lots of time to prepair for the shot...the AO on a quality scope can help...if not...they are a pain in the butt,to try to use in the field...a good fixed power scope..is the easiest to use..bar none...it allows you to focus on the target with out fumbling around for the power ring...but...a good quality variable scope gives you the option of more magnification when you need it...so...you need to deceide on the type of scope you would prefere...and then buy the best quality glass you can afford...it would seem that the Swift line...that has been mentioned is one of the better buys for the variables of late...and their quality is very good from everything I've read about them...some folks won't spend a-lot on a scope for their Handies...they can't see spending big bucks for such an inexpensive rifle...but I'm not one of them...if you can afford one of the higher priced quality scopes from Leupold...Burris...Weaver...then by all means get one...the brightness and clarity are well worth the extra money...not to mention their warrenties are basicly a no-hassel deal...

My favorite scopes are the Leupolds...their VX line is one of the best...and is the benchmark most other scope makers shoot for...I have a VX1 2-7x33 on my Marlin 1895GS ...and absolutly love it...it tracks perfect...and offers a good cross between the the higher priced models and lower priced bargin basement types,and gives me all the eye relief I need with heavy kicking loads with it's non-critical eye relief...it's bright and clear from wearing short sleeves...to my heavy down filled hunting coat......on my 308 Handi...I have a VX 3 3.5-10 X 40...and it fantastic scope......and offers me the magnification for those very long shots out to 300-400 yards...

Basicily...it all comes down to the amount of money you want to spend...and the type of scope you want...and you'll find everyone has their favorite brand...you need to go to where they have a good selection and compare them...not just under the store lights...but if possible...take them out side and look thru them in low lite ...that way you can see the difference between them...and you can be more happy with your decision..

For a expensive scope I would go with a burris fullfield 3-9x40.I have one and really like it.For a less expensive scope I would go with a Tasco World Class,I have several of my Handis scoped with them,and never had a problem so far.Tasco has a new ballistic plex that might would be cool to try.
