Anybody here reload for the 38-55 target rifle ? if so what are you using ? I think Santa is going to be good to an old man this year. I will probably need some good advice to get it going. I don't really care about speed, will probably shoot lead mostly.

Fire away and fall back :D

Accurate arms lists some "soft" loads with their xmp5744 powder, and the Lyman manuals have some low power loadings with Unique. I'm getting great groups in the 45-70 with light loadings of unique.

my cousin uses xmp5744 behind a hornady 225 grain jsp to pop balloons at 400 yards with. but you will have to get a ladder rear sight from smith enterprize to do it with. the factory one doesnt reach out that far
he dropped a nice fat doe with it at 225 yards

most report that loads using lead bullets are most accurate with low velocity loads.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Lots of good powders/loads for target velocity, cast bullet 38/55. Around 20 gr. of Rl 7 is as good as any. Check a manual for loads with 4198 (H or IMR) or 4227. I've used all these with success.  I just don't have loads for the last two powders safely enough in memory. This is a great handloader's cast bullet cartridge. Enjoy.
