getting a 357mag barrel but now have scope questions?
« on: November 19, 2004, 02:55:04 AM »
im getting a barrel from RAYNOR.i decided on a 357 mag barrel and im going to rechamber to 357max.i got a line on a reamer and i will have that on its way soon.

i do have a question on scope setup though.i am thinking about a 2-6 power scope for this gun or something like that.this gun will be used for hunting but i also will be spending some time at the range.i like the added power there.i now you guys have your guns set up with differant scopes and i would like some ideas.

what brands of scopes are you useing?

power of scope fixed or variable?

im thinking about a Bushnell Trophy 2-6 32mm hand gun scope.what do you think about this scope.and for a little less money how about the Simmons Pro Hunter 2-6 32mm

thanks for any replies,
jeff

variable scopes are great but you tend to loose F.O.V. at the higher powers and they are more expensive.

I have a redfield 2 1/2 on my 357 mag barrel. this scope is all I need for most of the shooting I care to do with a 357 mag.
I know with the max one can stretch the shots a bit but not that much.
I feel a 4 x scope would be good for most barrels chambered for a straight walled case.
I have found that my 2x Leupold scopes are a little underpowered  for my 375 jdj and 209x50 barrels ( anyone want to trade a very nice 2x Leupold for a T/C variable?)

Jeff,
I shot my 10" .357 Mag barrel for quite a while with a Leupy 2X. At 100yds I had to haxe at least a 6" aiming point to get a good sight picture. That notwithstanding, I did shoot several 2" groups at a hundred.
Then I changed to a Burris 3X. I honestly couldn't tell that much difference.
Now it wears a NC Star 2-7X. I figured for <$50, I'd give it a try. So far, I like it. The recoil isn't that bad on the .357, so I expect it to hold up. The variable is nice, but the eye relief changes a LOT from 2X to 7X. Most of the time, I leave it on 4X.
Would I like to have a nicer/more expensive scope? Sure, but I just haven't been able to justify the $200-$300 price tag on a Leupold or Burris... YET!
BTW, Are you going to rent or buy the max reamer. I might be interested, after you're done!

Bug,
i am renting the reamer from Leftoverdj.he hangs out on the NEF centerfire rifle forum here at graybeard outdoors.many of the 357 mag handi rifles have been rechambered to max.get ahold of him there and maybe i can send the reamer to you when im done with it.thats between him and you.

thanks for the replies so far

I think you've made a good choice in the Bushnell Trophy, have sold a bunch and never a problem with any. Big caliber handguns too, 30/06, 270, and 25/06 are three I can think of. They have held up to the recoil of those with no complaints at all. Reasonable priced as well.

I've had good luck with my Weaver 2.5-8x on my 14" bbl. As rickyp said the fov does get small at the higher powers. I set it on 4x while hunting unless I find a good rest. Mike
