Picked up my R700 CDL .35 Whelen today.
« on: November 12, 2004, 05:09:29 PM »
Oh this thing's gonna hurt. It is as light or maybe lighter than any of my LSS Mtn. Rifles. Ouch! Did I mention this thing's gonna hurt my shoulder? Gonna hafta find a way to tame it if I'm gonna get in any bench time with it prior to getting the shoulder surgery I need.

I'm really surprised at the light weight of it. From the Remington web site I was expected it to weight at least a full pound or more over what this one does. Now that new pad Remington has put on it really looks like. Should really help to soften the blow. BUT it seems to me it also is gonna require an extra 1/2" or so of scope eye relief as I think it's gonna compress that much in recoil.

Nice looking gun tho. Wood is no nicer than on a BDL and really not as nice as I've seen on the older original Mtn. Rifles. Sure wish it was SS metal and laminated wood but I reckon ya can't have everything ya want.

Did I mention this sucker is way too danged light for a .35 Whelen? Oh my aching shoulder.

There's nothing wrong with chicken if you can't own a gun to kill anything else. :-D  Oh, there's always those veggie burgers.
There's a Cabella's that's up north a bit and I heard they have a restuarant that serves  big and exotic game animals as all their menu items. Can't wait to try some.

Paco Kelly really recomends the decelerator system built into the stock, say's it really tames it down.  But I think you will be pleasantly surprised.  Also..if you really want to have some fun....load up some 158 gr XTP Hollow-point pistol bullets.....Yeehaw.....great varmint medicine.

Good luck!!!!!!!  I have a Remington model 600 in .350 Rem Mag.  The ballistic twin to the .35 Whelen.  As my Dad puts it "It knocks the snot out of you".  He's right, worst kicking gun I have ever shot.  Real light weight rifle with those heavy .35 cal bullets, it's brutal.  I also have a Ruger M-77 in .350 Rem Mag, that does not kick near as bad (heavier gun, longer barrel).  But I sure like what those .35 cal bullets do to Bears and Moose.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
