CLAROXAN: British Supplement for improved eyesight
« on: November 09, 2004, 11:33:18 AM »
Today I picked up the November/December/January 2004-2005 Issue of MOOSE.

On page 5 is an advertisment titled "The Ins & Outs of Better Shooting" by Andrew Easton.
The article explains how a British Supplement called CLAROXAN helped him to improve his vision and shooting technique, as he claims.
When I went on line, as expected, a month's supply is NOT cheap!!! http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_6_50/ai_115495758.

I have been experiencing some difficulty the last few years at the range trying to focus on iron sights and see the target adequately. I thought I would pass along this article to see if anyone here has bitten and tried CLAROXAN themselves????? I'm about ready to hang up the shooting jacket as nothing seems to be helping my eyes anymore.

Your problem is old age! Get yoourself an adjustable peep that attaches to a set of shooting glasses.

This product is being heavily promoted, but there is little evidence that it will improve eyesight.  It is basically a combination of vitamins - check out their website.  While there have been a few medical reports that some ingredients in this combination may slow up the process of macular degeneration (MD), or perhaps reduce the likelihood of onset of MD (less evidence of that), this does not demonstrate it has any effect on other problems with visual acuity.  Only a small proportion of people with reduced acuity have MD, and their treatment should be under the direction of an ophthalmologist, not a salesman.  Moreover, it's fairly expensive, and one can get the same basic ingredients far cheaper than for the cost of Claroxan.
So, while I can't prove this is snake oil, the exuberant promotional claims and lack of proof certainly make it sound like that to me.

Thanks Doc!
I've been seeing an eye specialist for a few years now (w/yearly exams) and I will bring this to his attention.  I drew the same conclusion based on my gut feelings. The only thing my doctor asked me was I taking a daily multi-vitamin with Lycopene...and I said yes.

As to the old age comment.........absolutely and the peep-sight on my eye-glasses I use already!

I saw my eye specialist today for my 6-month checkup and brought along the ad for his comments.  He said he knew nothing of this supplememnt but that it appeared to be a combination of vitamins used to treat macular degeneration.  He told me that he prescribes these kind of vitamins for severe to moderate cases of md BUT.......they will not help cases of non macular degeneration.  He also said I do not have md, but developing cataracts that are not ready for surgery as yet.
Guess I'll look into the Merit eyeglasses mounted aperture disc, or the cheaper Lyman non-adjudtable version.  The electricians tape with the 1/32" hole does do an amazing job!

Savage T, your eye specialist is exactly correct.  The advertised product is a vitamin mix, and the absolute effectiveness of these compounds even for MD is still a little controversial.  But since there are few other options in MD and the risk is minimal, they are being used.  He is also correct in noting that there's no evidence of benefit for any other conditions of reduced visual acuity.
Don't worry too much about the cataracts.  When the time comes to treat, an intracular lens will be emplaced and you will be astonished at the improvement.  It is interesting that people who need both eyes done always wait longer for the first procedure than they are willing to wait for the second one.
The Merit disc aperture is very helpful.

i wear glasses, one of my eyes is much worse than the other one, and i still wouldn't fall for stories like that. It's snake oil. If you need something, then it's one of the following:
- practice shooting, that makes you a better shot no matter how your eyes are.
 - go to a good doctor and get a good pair of glasses, and practice shooting after that.

My wife visits her eye surgeon regularly, since she has had the glaucoma surgery etc.
Her Dr. is a very well respected eye surgeon in this region.

While in the waiting room, visit before last...I saw that ad in a hunting magazine and took it into his office with me, since I am in the same boat as Jim is..and I have always loved "irons".

I showed him the advertisement and asked him about it..he read the ad over and had just two words for it..."snake oil"..

    That's good enough for me...

I have used scopes on almost everything in recent years...but I am about to start experimenting with ghost rings and peeps..
