The 454 Casull is a lot cheaper to buy factory rounds for and a lot cheaper to reload than the 500MAG. I have both, but if I had to choose one, it would be my 500MAG. I have put 200 round through mine in a few different shooting sessions.  :D  Now recoil is a lot more with the 500MAG.

I think you need to find someone with a 454 Casull and a 500 mag so you can shoot them. You seem very leary of the 454 Casull and 500Mag. More people have sold there 454 Casull and 500Mag's do to the recoil. Also you do not light load a 454Casull, you just shoot 45L/C's in the gun. Loading a 454 Casull or a 500Mag light can be just as dangerous as over loading the rounds. You need to quit trying to compare 454 and 500 rounds to others. Like I posted once before recoil is perceived differently from person to person. You can ask this question 1000 different times and you will get 1000 different answers.

I have a SRH in 454 casull with a 7-1/2" barrel. I primarily shoot 45LC thru it. Yes the 454 loads do kick a plenty. I am in the process getting my own reloading equiptment. I have been using a friends stuff and loading the 454 cases to 45LC+P specs, 1200 FPS with a 250 grain bullet. When I first bought it I fired hundreds of 45LC loads thru it.

I have 2 - .454`a. A Red Hawk and a raging Bull and I also have a .500 S&W. Eather round I would feel safe takeing any thing in North America short of Grizzle and for them I would want the .500. I`m a big bore freek so I prefer the .500. I also reload all of my own ammo and so far everything I`ve loaded for the .500 has been to the max., includeing the 440 grn. bullets, the largest I`ve loaded so far. My white tail load this year is a 350 grn. Hornady JHP over 43 grns. of Win. 296, book vel. about 1,875 fps. In the .454 max. load of Win. 296 with a 300 grn. bullet is 30 grns. and the bullets are alot cheaper so I can reload the .454 for about 1/2 the price of the .500. I would guess that the spred is even wider with new ammo. Another big advantage with the .454 is that you can fire .45 LC ammo in it. The other day I fired 45 round from the .500 from the bench, that`s all I wanted, and as I said I`m a big bore, ie. recoil freek.

Sageman,
I own a 35 Rem Super 14 and shoot 200 grain full power reloads and find this recoils LESS than my friends 7-1/2" 454 SRH with factory 300 grain Winchesters.
I have yet to shoot a 500 S&W so I can't comment on its recoil.
