New to the forum, but glad I found it.  I have a P94 that has been a great gun, but I'm thinking of trading it in on a Redhawk, SS, 5 1/2", 44 MAG.  I'm looking for a field gun mostly to carry in the backcountry.  Want something capable of dispatching bear or cougar if need be, but also want something for personal protection from other varmints of the two legged variety.  Would the Redhawk be a good gun for my purposes?  Thanks for your opinions!

Absolutely! Any good quality 44mag would fit that bill. The Redhawk is a fine pistol.   KN

I carry a blued 5.5" Redhawk 44 as my trail gun, and it's served this purpose longer than any other trail gun I've packed.  My wife likes it better than any other handgun we own, including some much milder guns.  Of course, she likes to see targets get broken, not just punctured.  I wouldn't mind having Redhawks in 41 mag and 45 Colt, either.

Thanks for your input.  I have also been told by some that a Blackhawk .357 would better serve my purpose as it is easier to shoot than the .44.  Any thoughts?  Thanks again!

jp-

I used to have a .357 Blackhawk in my collection, but I sent it on its way.  It needed to have the chamber mouths recut in order to use cast bullets, and that seemed like too much trouble at the time.  It's a nice gun overall, however, and it would serve your purposes.  I would recommend Federal Cast Core loads for your trail needs, NOT expanding bullets.  I saw an interesting series of pictures snapped of a fish and game guy trying to shoot a bear off with a 357, and it was his last bullet that managed to penetrate just enough to break the bear's neck.  The rest of the 158 grain bullets opened so wide and fast that they failed to reach vitals, and one bullet was launched towards the heavens, without hitting the bear at all.  The guy lived, and he said that his 22 LR would have outpenetrated the 357, and, considering the headshots he had made, a 22 that could penetrate the skull would have done better than the 357 bullets that flattened out on the bone.  Anyway, a trail gun needs to penetrate more than open up, so stick with FMJ or hard cast bullets.

PA-Joe is right, too.  A 44 Special load with tough bullets would make a decent choice in a trail gun, and it would be very easy to shoot in the Redhawk.

I load my Redhawk with Keith bullets for trail loads, and my alloy comes out to about 240 grains per bullet before lube.  Loaded over a full charge of H110, they have some snap to them, but it's far easier to shoot well than a 300 grain or heavier bullet.  A hard cast bullet with decent mass going 1000 fps or faster will handle your trail chores pretty well.

I carry a RH 5.5 in the field, usually with 240 sp hard cast to about 1000fps. I may mag port it and do 44 mags at 1400. Its a great gun, I plan on buying one in 7.5" to replace my Taurus 8.?"> I replaced the grips with Pach's declerators, trigger springs from Browell's, and your good to go.

Thanks for all the input.  Sounds like either way I would do all right.  Of course, I may just end up keeping my P94, too.  I sure like it and nine shots is better than six.  Thaks again to all.

I too am going to get a 44 mag Redhawk 5 1/2" but I am looking for something a little different.  I have been on the Ruger website an found they are making some models of revolvers in the Target Grey color.  I am waiting until they get around to making a Redhawk this way.  My big problem is that I want to carry it crossdraw and nobody makes a leather crossdraw with a thumbsnap.  Galco makes on that is perfect but only for the Smith 649  Anyway I am going to wait for what I really want.

Very nice carry gun!  I like the lanyard ring especially while fishing.  The barrel is bobbed a bit short for my taste but that is personal.  Teh perfect carry gun is one that is daranger size while carrying and full sized when needed  :-D  No such thing as a perfect solution
