The 30-30 load I refered to in another post, Nosler 180 Partition over 33.7 grains of surplus WC 846 gives an average velocity of 2245 fps. This falls nearly dead between the charge of H335/BL-C2 listed in Lymans #48 and is just 10 fps slower than the BL-C2 load. Their data was developed in a 24" test barrel, so I figure this is probably at or just over SAAMI pressures. Load is very accurate, but what was surprising was shooting an old box of Remington 150 grain SP (Yes the famous GREN BOX) that load averaged 2403 fps and gave me 3 three shot groups of 3/8" at 50 yards. I've not ever seen this rifle shoot that good. I did have the forearm from the 357 Max on the barrel, it is a looser fit. Hmmmmmm........
I spent the best part of the day playing with the 45-70. I was again using a surplu powder that is sold by Jeff Bartlett at
www.gibrass.com. Powder is #107. It is a flake powder that loads to AA#7 data, but I have found it a bit closer to Blue Dot. I loaded it under Lee's 340 and 405 HP bullets. 17.4 grains (RCBS Lil Dandy rotor #24) the load pushes the 340 at 1270 adn the 405 at 1230. Neither gave great accuracy even at a short 50 yards. I moved down to 11.7 grains (RCBS Lil Dandy rotor #17) and was rewarded with nice 1.5" 5 shot groups, but velocities were 980 for the 340 and 945 fro the 405. I moved the load up to 15 grains, velocities moved into the 1100's but again, the accuracy was not great. Minute of deer, yes, but not what I would want to carry out into the feild.
12.7 grains of Unique under the 405 yeilds a very even 1100 fps, and 5 shot groups of 1.5" 3 shots touching. (I fired 3 seperate groups of 5 and got this each time, the "flyers" could easily be me) I'm gonna switch directions a bit and carry this one out in the woods next weekend. Zeroed at 70 yards, this load shoots 1 1/4" high at 50 and 4 1/2" low at 100. It is strictly a short range proposition. Makes a few feet over 1000fps at 100 and is eeking out something like 948 foot pounds at that range.
Hopefully the deer will smile on me and I will get a chance to try this load out, and perhaps give me a chance to retry the 30-30.
