Using 454 brass in a 45/410????

I'm curios if anyone has tried using 454 brass (with appropriate 45 colt loads) in their 45/410. My interest is if accuracy improved any with the slightly longer case. I'm thinking larger bullet with longer case = less jump to the rifling. Probably still not enough to make a difference but I don't want to re-invent the wheel if someone has tried it.

Very interresting concept .. If you do experiment w/ it by all means let us know. If you want to get closer yet to the lands, perhaps a case as long as a .410?? Yea I've got 'em (no I'm not the only one) They are 303 british blown out straight. I would suggest some reading in the Lee first edition reloading manual, as there is a convenient formula for ctg volume, vs bullet wt, vs charge wt. vs preasure. I have used it and checked the results w/ a chronograph and it is quite accurate. That way you could approximate the pressure curve/velocity of a .45 colt to yer "Giraffe" 45!! Makin me wish I had a 45/.410 to experiment with.

Why blow ot a 30 caliber with a crappy rim and a hard tapered case when you can use a 444 Marlin with a better rim and it only has to go from .44 to .45?  Also 444 brass is excelent and strong.  You can fireform just by fireing cheap .44 lead dum-dums.

I absolutely agree that 444's are stronger and easier formed, but around here 303's are cheaper, available,and plenty strong enough for loads duplicating factory .45 colt ballistics. I guess I would use whatever was available if I was experimenting anyway... Marty

I moved the bullet out on my 454 Encore loads and the accuracy improved quite a bit. It's a 335g cast LFN and I had the mold made for my SRH with the CG set at .400. The TC bbl has a long throat so I seated it into the first lube groove behind the crimp groove. Moves it out .100 and makes it a real shooter. Had to increase powder charge around 3 grains to gain back what I lost.
