I have used the bullet in both the factory load, as well as hand loads. I've used the the factory load from my 28" Browning HiWall, on numerous whitetails in the midwest. On every whitetail there was complete penetration, entry and exit wounds were roughly the size of a quarter to half dollar and rarely did they run more than 50 yards, if at all. Factory loads quote around 1300 fps. Handloading the same bullet with IMR 3031 I get roughly 1700 fps. Same penetration, same performance, I wanted the extra velocity for 250 yard shots on elk.
Factory loads on bison should be no problem, keeping in mind your distances you should be fine. Afterall, before the newest super stout short blamo wamo mags, was the Springfield Trapdoors, and you can be assured that they launched a 405 grain bullet at 1300 fps, or less, and contributed to the death of many heads of game. Practice is key. If you can hit what you are aiming at, the bullet will do fine.
