I intend to try a few loads using Hodgdon's new Triple Seven powder (I did a product review article in the Nov./Dec. issue of my magazine) in my .45-70, however, I do not intend to do enough of this to warrant the purchase of the drop tube, etc. I will probably use a Lee dipper to "weigh" the charges (after I determine volume equaliv.) onto my scale, and then drop the charge into the case. My question is, without a drop tube, is there anything I need to know or to do in lew of the drop tube in order to settle the powder correctly...

Ironknees, I personally use a drop tube so don't have direct experience in other techniques, but others have reported good success by filling the case with 1/2 the powder and tapping the side of the case, then pouring in the rest of the powder in and tapping the case some more. Another approach I've heard of is using a vibrating tumbler/case cleaner as the soruce of vibration to settle the powder. And finally I've heard of one person using an electric shaver as the vibration source.

From what I've read the drop tube is reported to be the most consistant assuming one maintains the same pour-rate of powder into the funnel.

By the way, from what I can tell the only real reason to use a drop tube or other vibration techniques is to get more powder into the case.

I'll be interested to see responses to your question from others.

Howdy

I use both Pyrodex and 777, a slight difference between the two when put on scale. An there is is difference in the powders also the 777 is hotter and I get a faster fps with it. I do use a 24" drop tub now but did load 1/2 and tap down the the other 1/2, but you get more in with the tube.
Try a couple of large soda straws stuck together with a paper funnel on top to pour the powder into, it will be more consistent than tapping and filling. Then a wad cut from a milk cartoon, a cookie, another wad then the bullet , compress and crimp.

At one time before I got a drop tube, someone suggested holding the loading block against the vibrating case cleaner, well I tried it...... I had powder all over the floor. I would suggest you NOT try that! :-D

Yep, my tumbler is FAR to aggressive for that. Also, when I did the product review on Triple Seven, I did notice that I had to tap my measure when loading my muzzleloader, much more so than with Pyrodex... If I get hooked on BP cartridge loading, of course I will get all the "goodies", but for now, I just want to try a few shots, more or less just the heck of it... thanks guys for the answers. I think my cordless mustache trimmer would work great... or I may just give the cases a light tap. Heck, at my age, my hands shake so much that just holding them would probably do it...

Why use the fake stuff when you can get the real thing for have the price? I tried that 777 stuff it sends the bullet faster but it dont shoot worth a hoot.The fouling in front the troath is verry hard.Lp.
(I dont know if I spelled troath right on not Never did learn how guess I havt ta go up to Alaska an have Daveinthebush teach me or learn from Marsh I kinda like his way) :-D

Settling black powder to get the full 70 grains ffg can be accomplished by holding an electric razor against the case. Works for me anyway.

Use a brass or steel rod about 4/6 inch long resting on top of the powder when taping or vibrating compact the powder. Or a shorter lead weight. It keeps the powder from danceing all over the floor or if you prefer lap danceing.
