Shooting gloves for Big Bore/Heavy recoiling handguns????
« on: September 30, 2004, 11:31:25 AM »
I have been shooting a lot with my heavy loaded 45 Colt s/s Ruger Bisley Vaquero's and my 454 Casull Ruger Super Redhawk. Can anyone recommend a quality pair of shooting gloves for these heavy recoiling handguns?

best ive found is a plain old leather work glove with the fingers cut off. When shooting my .500 or .475 the boughten shooting gloves have so much padding in them that it interferes with my grip.

I have discovered that the commercial shooting glove such as Uncle Mikes is padded in teh web area of the hand. The issue I have with that is that my palm still gets hit. As Lloyd pointed out, it also interferes with a grip and that is one of the more important elements of accurate handgunning.

Home Depot sells a pair of fingerless leather gloves for about 12 bucks. Thats what I use. I'm a right handed shooter and my left hand takes the worst beating. Probably the best thing you could do is buy a grip squeezer to strengthen your grip.

If I'm going to shoot a lot I also tape my left hand index finger knuckle with medical tape.

Be Safe,
Scott

I picked this on some forum and it works for me. Go to a bike store and get there riding gloves, they are well padded, fingerless tips. They are a little cheaper at wally world.

The pair of shooting glove I have doesn't help with my knuckles getting bashed.  I have to tape them or Brownells has a knuckle save that looks like a leather band aid.  They do take some shock but I don't use mine.  They do interfere with the grip

Call me crazy but I used a batting/golf glove for years shooting "sillywets".They also helped when hunting with hard recoiling guns when I was hunting, still do! The biker gloves are to padded to give a good grip on the gun.The work gloves are not soft enough for a good consistent feel for me.

I had tried all kinds of different mechanic gloves, leather gloves even bike gloves but none of them where what I was looking for. I just bought a pair of Uncle Mike's shooting gloves and so far they seem to be ok but I haven't had a chance to really try them out yet.
Thanks for the replies

Camp Cook, What has worked best for me is a pair of thin, I like buckskin, gloves that are a little tighter fitting than I would wear for other activities. Not super tight just snug. Hope this helps, Byron

I use a pair of Uncle Mike's Leather Shooting Gloves. They have a thin pad in the web, on the thumb(palm side) and on the back of the middle finger where the trigger guard hits your finger under heavy recoil.

They seem to be very well designed and definately take the BITE out of recoil. I like mine.

I've been looking for shooting gloves too,and here in town there is a store that sell fireman and police accessories so I figured they might have shooting gloves there.Nope but they did have leather gloves and frisking gloves for 30 bucks and on the close out table they had leather gloves with the fingers cut off for 5 so I bought them.Went shooting today with the Encore .44mag and the gloves  and man they worked out great real good grip and the leather was enough to help with some of the recoil.

I shoot a lot of 357 Mag., 41 Mag.,  44 Mag., 45 Colt, 454 Cas. and 444 Marlin top end loading and to be quite frank the old hand can take a beating.  The first 30 or so round out my 454 bruised and swelled my hand so after that I started using a glove.  The shooting gloves were not what I wanted.  I now use a Industrial safety glove from Valeo it is a anti vibration sueded leather padded half finger with a wrist wrap.  I did take the rigid stay out of the wraist but this gloves works just fine try this web site http://www.valeoinc.com/products.php?Safety+Gloves you can get them from safety supply houses.  If I remeber it cost me around $25.00 it makes shooting the big bores a little more fun to shoot.

Have a good day and remember to pray for our troops.

I got a pair of weight lifting gloves at wally world for 8 bucks and they have
some padding in the palm and web seem to work great so far.
Athletics Works are the name of the gloves for those interested.

I have a pair of these gloves and they are nice for the range.  Not too practical for the woods, IMHO.  I got my old black leather gloves I used on the job as a cop and it has a thinsulate lining and works very well in the woods.

The only time I really need my gloves and save my hands for being hurt is when I shoot my .375 JDJ.  That is a very good gun to have in the woods, but I gotta tell ya it hurts to shoot.  And that is with a 220 gr bullet and 48 grs of IMR4895.  but once it hits a target it stays hit.

Happy hunting!

I find that ANY sort of glove interferes with my shooting accuracy when it comes to handguns.
My solution to this is that you should shoot a gun that has recoil that you are comfortable with, WITHOUT using any stinkin' gloves.
I will preface this by saying I'm not sensitive to heavy recoil; "I can take it" when it comes to virtually any handgun I have shot including some hairy 45-70s.
I have not as of yet touched off a heavy 500 S&W Mag though.....
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

:cb2: I've used batting gloves for years. Gonna try the Uncle Mikes next. Kinda like the idea of the padding on the middle finger.

I too use the padded weight lifting gloves.  They have no fingers, have padding in the palm, and don't cost too much at any sports store that sells weight lifting stuff.  I don't bother with my .44, but when I am doing an extended session with the .480 SRH, it makes the palm of my hand a little happier.
